The Trump Administration Unveils List Of Immigration Demands In Exchange For Softening Up On Dreamers

Last month, word got out that President Trump reached some sort of agreement on DACA with Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi. Many conservatives flew off the handle and accused Trump of betrayal.

Sarah Sanders quickly rushed in to mitigate the damage.

While DACA and border security were both discussed, excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to.

Trump followed up with some tweets of his own.

No deal was made last night on DACA. Massive border security would have to be agreed to in exchange for consent. Would be subject to vote.

The WALL, which is already under construction in the form of new renovation of old and existing fences and walls, will continue to be built.

Pelosi and Schumer released a joint statement, confirming Trump’s tweets.

So there was no official “deal,” but there was a general “agreement.”

The saga continues. On Sunday night, the Trump administration released a list of major changes it wants to see in the immigration system in exchange for softening up on Dreamers. The requests include a wall, thousands of additional immigration agents and major crackdowns on sanctuary cities. Oddly enough, there was nothing in there about internment camps. Someone please alert Pelosi. She’ll want to know.

The requests included additional crackdowns on “sanctuary cities” that protect illegal immigrants; reducing the number of incoming refugees; 10,000 more Customs and Border Patrol agents; and new initiatives curbing the number of unaccompanied immigrants who come to the U.S. illegally as children. Democrats already have said many of the White House’s terms are off the table.

 

“Unfortunately, over the last several decades respect for the rule of law has broken down and immigration enforcement has been sacrificed for the sake of political expediency. This has made us less secure and it cannot stand,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement. “Now President Trump has put forth a series of proposals that will restore the rule of law to our immigration system, prioritize America’s safety and security, and end the lawlessness. These are reasonable proposals that will build on the early success of President Trump’s leadership. This plan will work. If followed it will produce an immigration system with integrity and one in which we can take pride. Perhaps the best result will be that unlawful attempts to enter will continue their dramatic decline.”

Schumer and Pelosi say the list “goes so far beyond what is reasonable.” Their joint statement reads:

“The Administration can’t be serious about compromise or helping the Dreamers if they begin with a list that is anathema to the Dreamers, to the immigrant community and to the vast majority of Americans.

 

“We told the President at our meeting that we were open to reasonable border security measures alongside the DREAM Act, but this list goes so far beyond what is reasonable. This proposal fails to represent any attempt at compromise.

 

“The list includes the wall, which was explicitly ruled out of the negotiations. If the President was serious about protecting the Dreamers, his staff has not made a good faith effort to do so.”

It’s nice to see that Trump is standing his ground and not COMPLETELY bending over.
