I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… my generation isn’t looking for a marriage built on love, respect, and shared values anymore. They’re just looking for another way to keep up appearances. They’re looking for a shiny ring to instagram while holding a Starbucks cup. They’re looking for a wedding shower that gets hundreds of “likes” on social media, and a pinterest-worthy wedding.
In a society devoid of values, why should anyone value marriage?
Nothing makes that more painfully apparent than this story.
The Mirror published a piece about a woman who took to the internet to b*tch about her cheap engagement ring.
DP proposed and presented me with the ring he’d chosen — a diamond solitaire in white gold. I was so happy and excited to accept but was disappointed when I first saw the ring. The first word that entered my head was “small.” There’s nothing to dislike about the type of ring per se, as a diamond solitaire would have been my choice, but it’s the whole thing — the color of the gold, the setting, the small stone and relatively chunky shoulders. His salary is nearing a 6 figure sum and he’s usually very generous.
Having seen the receipt I know he paid £1,300 for it — which is a lot less than I would have imagined he would have spent on such a significant piece of jewelry. He’ll be more disappointed in me for making a fuss over it when, in his eyes, it fits and there’s nothing actually wrong with it rather than being disappointed that I’m not truly happy with it. Someone at work apparently told him that “if she makes it all about the ring, then she’s not the girl for you.” Ideally I would have loved for us to have chosen a ring together and made a special day finding one we both liked.
As it’s something I’ll be wearing every day and is such a special piece of jewelry I wanted to really love it and I just don’t. Has anyone else been in this situation? What did you do?
Get a grip, you ungrateful twit.
She has the GALL to complain about the only sane person involved. Someone at work said “if she makes it all about the ring, then she’s not the girl for you.” WAAAAAH! HOW RUDE! It IS all about the ring! HOW DARE THEY!
Does she not realize how GROSS this makes her sound? Does she not realize that this is perfectly sound advice?
It is, in fact, NOT all about the ring. An engagement ring is a material symbol of a deep spiritual and emotional bond. Compared to this supposed bond, the ring is nothing. The ring is a simple formality, you ignorant hag.
My advice? Look down at this symbol of the love he has for you, and be grateful that your man is “usually very generous,” that he loves you deeply, and that he has enough sense to not blow thousands on a material symbol.
Your man knows it’s not “all about the ring.” Be grateful that he knows this. Be grateful he doesn’t feel he has something to prove by blowing his savings on a diamond rather than the down-payment on the house your children will grow up in, rather than experiences you will treasure as priceless memories for the rest of your life. Be grateful, and shut your mouth. Your selfish is showing.
Maybe if you make it to 10 years, you can get an “upgrade.” I’ll be shocked if you do, but I wish you the best.
A marriage takes commitment. You can’t even commit to valuing your bond above material appearances…. Maybe you should save everyone the time, money, and pain of a failed marriage now, call it quits NOW, and buy yourself some shiny jewelry.
Of course, many of the comments tell her to tell him she doesn’t like it and wants a bigger one. Excellent advice from a similar bunch of ungrateful twits. Surely they’re all in successful, loving marriages.
Values: people don’t have them anymore.
