According to an article in Golf Magazine, President Trump told his golf buddies why he really jets off to golf clubs (particularly Bedminster) as often as he can: It’s because the White House is “a real dump.”
As President, Trump has already made four visits to the club. He has his own cottage adjacent to the pool; it was recently given a secure perimeter by the Secret Service, leading to the inevitable joke that it’s the only wall Trump has successfully built. Chatting with some members before a recent round of golf, he explained his frequent appearances: “That White House is a real dump.” (A White House spokesperson denies this occurred.) Trump is often at his most unguarded among the people who pay for their proximity to him. Last November, the President-elect hosted a cocktail reception and dinner at Bedminster on the same weekend that he was holding interviews at the club with candidates for his Cabinet. At the dinner, Trump addressed the members of the club by saying, “This is my real group. You are the special people. I see all of you. I recognize, like, 100% of you, just about.” Then he issued an open invitation to drop in on his Cabinet interviews the next day.
There’s one thing I’d like to note that most people seem to be ignoring: “A White House spokesperson denies this occurred.” So there’s a bit of pushback, but I’ll say it: It does sound like something Trump would say. And I know we’d probably be freaking out if someone like Obama said something similar while he was president, but the reality is, the White House is actually downgrade for the Trumps. There’s clearly not enough gold. No gold rimmed glasses. Or gold toilet lids. Or gold trays. Or just bars of gold lying around.
I think incoming administrations get $100,000 to redecorate, which is nothing to Trump, I’m sure.
We don’t know if Trump really said that. If he did, he probably said it in a joking kind of way, but he really shouldn’t have.
That being said, Chelsea Clinton would like to remind us all that she loves the White House and wishes her mom lived there would never ever EVER say anything bad about it.
Thank you to all the White House ushers, butlers, maids, chefs, florists, gardeners, plumbers, engineers & curators for all you do every day https://t.co/rjQS9HeALG
