Charlie Gard’s Parents Have A Hospice Doctor Who’ll Take Care Of Charlie At Home. The Courts Are STILL Being A Pain About It.

I know I keep harping on and on about this, but it pisses me off to no end how obnoxious and stupid the British courts have been – and continue to be – with this family.

Yesterday, we told you that the Great Ormond Street Hospital still won’t let Chris Gard and Connie Yates take their son Charlie home, even though Charlie’s parents have said that they’re not going to try taking him for treatment in the United States (Government-Run Medicine: 1; Regular People: 0). It’s like they’re determined to force this little boy to die in the hospital, even though there is no reason for him to be there anymore.

The hospital says it’s to make sure that Charlie gets the best end of life care, but anyone with an Actual Brain can see that this is just about a socialized health care system refusing to admit that their system blows chunks

However, according to this, Chris and Connie have found a doctor willing to provide hospice care for Charlie at home. Their attorney, Grant Armstrong, said this about it –

Barrister Grant Armstrong, legal representation for Gard’s parents, told Justice Francis of the U.K. High Court on Wednesday that nurses from the Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and a retired doctor have volunteered to care for Gard in hospice for “a week or so,” according to The Guardian. Connie Yates, Gard’s mother, urged any “pediatric intensive care doctor to come forward” to help Tuesday evening after a hearing in which representatives of GOSH argued that Gard could not be taken home, according to Daily Mail.

“The parents’ last wish is to take Charlie home for a few days of tranquillity outside the hospital,” Armstrong told the court Tuesday. “Provided appropriate medical care is provided to Charlie, Great Ormond Street has no legal right to detain him in hospital. They have put obstacle after obstacle in the parents’ way.”

And yet, the court system is still being a PITA about it, saying that the hospital claims that the ventilator necessary to keep Charlie alive won’t fit through the door of the Gard/Yates home –

The hospital contends that the ventilator required to keep Gard alive would not fit through the door of his parents’ home. They also said that a full team of medics and a police escort would be required to transport Gard to his home.

Though even that claim is dubious, seeing as the NHS has also said there are portable ventilators available that are much smaller and would do the job nicely. And who cares if they need to send medics and a police escort and a military flyby and a circus parade to get him home? DO IT. What is it going to kill you to finally show some semblance of humanity to this family?! Freaking let the baby go home and spend his last few days in peace with his mother and father! They’ve made accommodations for this, they’ve found someone willing to help – what more are you going to demand??

But I guess that’s still too much to ask at this point. Even when Chris and Connie had raised the money to take Charlie to the US, even when they had doctors volunteering to take care of him en route, even when they had the stinking US CONGRESS giving them legal residence in America – the British government refused to budge. And they had no earthly reason to object. Why would we expect them to be caring and compassionate now?

I was never that big a fan of government-run healthcare before. But even if I had been on the fence about it, Charlie Gard’s story would have pushed me over the edge. There has been NO REASON for any of this to have happened. NONE.
