Stephen Colbert Mocks Rachel Maddow’s Hilariously Bad Report On Trump’s Tax Returns

I’m not a fan of Stephen Colbert by any stretch of the imagination, but he poked fun at Rachel Maddow Wednesday night, and it was actually pretty funny.

“I hold in my hand something very significant,” Colbert said. “It is a joke, a joke that we have confirmed has been heard by Donald Trump. We believe this is the first time any joke dealing with Donald Trump has been released.”

“Why did the chicken …,” Colbert continued before adding, “but first a word on chickens.”

That’s the thing about good humor. It has to have an element of truth. That’s what makes this so funny. Rachel Maddow went on for TWENTY MINUTES. We’re talking about a tremendous buildup. It was painful. Brain cells were lost. Maddow went on weird Russia-related rants. She mentioned things that had NOTHING to do with the tax return. Again, it took her TWENTY MINUTES to deliver the punchline, only to find out that there was no punchline.

Other late night shows should take note. I don’t mind someone poking fun at Trump and his advisers if it’s all in good fun and has an element of truth. But weak jokes on the travel ban? Casting Attorney General Jeff Sessions as a racist Forest Gump? Calling Trump a “little white b*tch”? Taking a swipe at Ivanka Trump by labeling her “complicit”? Yeah, not comedy.
