One of the left’s biggest complaints about President Trump is that he wants to build a big, beautiful wall along our southern border. The arguments against the wall range from the absurd-masquerading-as-compassion to the fiscal (as if Democrats ever gave a crap about government spending before now).
This column by John Nolte at the Daily Wire actually takes on both of those complaints. And he does it by focusing on the cost of the wall. We’ve already talked about a different study that showed the cost-effectiveness of building the wall (building the wall vs. paying for the constant stream of illegal immigrants flooding our welfare system), but Nolte’s take is worth considering as well.
First, he talks about some of the estimates flying around – ranging from $21 billion to $40 billion. Just as a worst-case scenario, Nolte takes the $40 billion estimate and works from there –
For argument’s sake, let’s go ahead and assume that the eventual cost of a border wall will reach the worst case scenario of $40 billion.
For argument’s sake (only), let’s concede that Trump won’t be able to fulfill his promise of having Mexico pay for the wall, so all of it falls on us, the taxpayers.
So what?
The estimates of the ANNUAL cost of illegal immigration rank as high as $113 billion to as low as — oh, look, although the left-wing PolitiFact gives that widely circulated number a “mostly false,” these proven serial-liars can only say, “Reports by pro-immigration or neutral groups have come in significantly lower.”
In other words, they don’t have any current estimates.
Hm… a one-time cost of $40 billion versus an annual cost of $113 billion. I’m no math whiz, but I certainly don’t need to call in an accountant to give me advice on that decision.
Nolte also looks at an absurdly low claim that illegal immigrants only cost taxpayers $25 billion per year (“only,” you know) – which, if you passed third-grade math, you know adds up to $250 billion over ten years. And it only multiplies from there.
Again – $40 billion versus $250 billion. Why is this so difficult.
But what I love most about this analysis is that Nolte doesn’t just look at the money associated with this endeavor. First, here’s Nolte’s analysis and then I’ll explain why I like it so much –
What about the human factor?
Countless Mexicans have died in the desert trying to enter our country illegally. The deterrence of a 50-foot wall should cut those deaths considerably.
Then there is the additional human cost of all the drugs and crime that flow across the open sieve that is our border; the lives ruined, the families torn apart… A sturdy border wall would cut down considerably on the deadly flow of heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana. And this in turn would decrease the amount of human carnage caused by the ongoing border drug wars.
How do you even begin to put a price on that?
This might be a stretch, but it’s the first thing I thought of as I read this column. A few weeks back, I posted a video from a YouTuber known as RazorFist talking about the need for a border wall. Rather than simply talk about the fiscal ramifications, RazorFist pointed out the humanitarian benefits of building the wall – both on the Mexican side of the border and the American side. Yes, building the wall AND imposing stricter border control will help stem the flow of illegal immigrants as well as drugs and crime coming through to infest our cities and neighborhoods. But it will also make Mexico turn inward and fix their problems. If the Mexican government can’t ship their impoverished people here to be a burden on our system, they will have to fix their problems. Either that, or risk anger and uprising from the people they’ve stomped on for decades and gotten away with it because those people will simply just skip across the border and make America deal with Mexico’s problems.
(If you haven’t watched it yet, I HIGHLY recommend RazorFist’s analysis as well.)
In fact, according to Nolte, the ONLY reason the left wants to keep illegal immigrants coming is the votes –
The only upside to NOT building a wall is for Leftists and their media allies, these heartless mercenaries desperate to increase the number of potential Democrat voters. They need these votes and see even Texas eventually turning Blue if the illegal flow continues.
Numerous studies already show that illegal aliens voting is a potentially massive problem. Regardless, if an illegal has children here in America, that anchor baby is an automatic American citizen, which means an increased number of Democrats, even without all of that illegal voting.
If you boil down Democrat/MSM opposition to reasonable border security, it is only VOTES.
The true compassion, along with the fiscal benefits, are all on Trump’s side.
Whatever cost the border wall comes to in the end, it will MORE than pay for itself in the long run. Sure beats the crap out of the stupid system we have in place now (or lack thereof).
