Adnan Fazeli was an Iranian refugee who lived in Freeport, Maine with his family. He settled in Portland in 2009 with his wife and three children. On Aug. 13, 2013, he left the states for Turkey. He was scheduled to return Nov. 3, 2013 but never did. Investigators later discovered that he died January 2015, fighting for the Islamic State.
But during the four years that he was actually here and not– you know– terrorizing innocents, he used federal and state welfare programs to support himself and his family. Terrorists need help too.
Needless to say, Maine Governor Paul LePage is horrified and said he’s going to have the Maine Department of Health and Human Services “look at our welfare rolls closer,” to which I say, “YA THINK?”
“I’m having [the Maine Department of Health and Human Services] look at our welfare rolls closer. All the other states should look at the eligibility, too,” he said.
“If people need to eat, I’ll feed them. But I want to keep Americans safe,” LePage continued. “This is very embarrassing to the state of Maine, and I point the finger at the president and say, ‘How did this happen?’ If the federal government doesn’t do their job we don’t know what we’re getting.”
I should note, LePage’s comments really ticked off the ACLU. They accused him of breaking federal laws by violating the privacy of welfare recipients. Terrorists deserve a little privacy, don’t you think? It’s none of your business what they do or how they choose to run their lives.
“The LePage administration reportedly exposed a family’s private information in order to further its anti-welfare agenda. Who knows whom the next target will be – the elderly, people with disabilities,” the ACLU’s Alison Beyea said. “No one should have to worry about their personal lives being leaked to the press anytime the administration wants to score political points. But if it happened to one family, it could happen to any of us.”
However, LePage’s administration said the reporters already had information on Fazeli’s family before speaking with him.
According to Maine state records, 35 non-citizen families are receiving TANF benefits and 361 non-citizen families are receiving food stamps.
Fazeli’s family is no longer on Maine’s welfare rolls.
But yeah. Government sucks so hard that taxpayers sometimes end up giving free stuff to terrorists. We should definitely take in more poor refugees. For sure.
