The Rio Olympics are officially underway! Although I missed the opening ceremony because stupid Direct TV has some sort of ongoing beef with Sunbeam Television Corp. and has “temporarily” blacked out that channel in Boston markets. I’m so beyond ticked off. I’ll probably call and yell at them later. (Let me just say, if Boston peeps end up missing the first Pats game too, Direct TV should just pack up shop. You do NOT want to deal with angry New England Patriots fans.)
Anywho, the Olympics. It’s in Rio, which as we’ve told you before, is completely disgusting. The Olympic village itself is dangerous and gross, with exposed wires, leaky pipes and blocked toilets. Experts have already warned athletes to keep their mouths closed while competing in water-related sports, as the water is full of fecal matter and dead body rot. You know. The norm.
Olympic athletes shouldn’t have to deal with that. I think we can all agree. But things are just getting worse.
According to this, Australia’s Olympic swimming team was pulled out of the main training pool over fears of– you guessed it– unsafe water.
The water was so “cloudy” and “soupy” that swim coach Michael Bohl pulled his swimmers out and had them practice in the main competition pool instead.
“That pool looked really cloudy,” Bohl said. “Rather than risk eye, ear or any other infection we brought them in here.”
While the affable Bohl was not trying to cause another stir, he did compare the athletes’ village with a camp site.
‘It’s no Taj Mahal, it’s no utopia but it’s fine,’ he said.
‘It’s almost like a camping thing. One day the hot water is not working and next day it is.
‘Some rooms water is flooding around.’
Isn’t that nice? And speaking of water quality…
In the lead up to the Rio Olympics, concerns have been raised over the quality of the sporting facilities after the main sailing ramp at Rio’s Marina da Gloria collapsed into the bluish-green waters.
Olympic athletes have been told not to put their heads under water at Guanabara Bay, which will host the triathlon, sailing and some swimming events.
Competitors have also been told to keep their mouths shut when competing in the water.
Last month, a floating corpse and a severed arm were found floating in the water.
Oh. A floating corpse and severed arm. Lovely. Remind me why Rio was chosen again?
