Pop Culture Feminists Are TOTALLY Not Talking About ‘Game Of Thrones,’ Even Though They Just Did

Just for the record – I despise The Mary Sue with the burning fury of a thousands suns. That brand of liberal feminist tripe makes it extremely difficult to enjoy anything pop culture related. They can’t even have the traditional debate over who’d win between Batman and Superman without the conversation devolving into a bunch of angry screeching about “SMASH THE PATRIARCHY!”

Basically, The Mary Sue is the “Stop Having Fun” Police of geek culture on the internet (well, there are others, but few as insufferable as they are. Feminists just seem to have a knack for sucking the fun out of everything).

If you remember last year, EVERYONE had an unholy freak-out over an episode of Game of Thrones where (year-old spoiler warning!) Sansa Stark is raped by Ramsay Bolton on their wedding night. The Mary Sue in particular wrapped themselves in self-righteous sackcloth and ashes over the episode, dramatically proclaiming that they would NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER again promote a show where incest, rape, gratuitous female nudity, murder, violence, and skeevy men perving on women were commonplace sights from the first episode. They may have even flopped on a fainting couch and called for smelling salts in the process.

Actually, HBO’s ratings might have gone up after The Mary Sue stopped covering them. Not entirely sure about that, but their non-endorsement would make me think about watching (if I actually had HBO, that is).

Fast forward to this year and the ending the most recent season of Game of Thrones. By all accounts, it seemed to go over pretty well. Everyone I know that watches the show has had nothing but praise for the story and where it’s going. The women on the show apparently had some great moments this season.

And, wouldn’t you know it, even TMS made a big deal over it. They had a roundtable discussion about the season and the finale. But the most ridiculous thing about their non-promotion of their discussion? Where they had to explicitly say “We’re totally still not talking about this show… but yeah, we’re actually going to talk about it” –

Huh. I guess the hype was too much for even the sanctimonious liberal feminist shrills of geek culture to resist.

I don’t care if TMS promotes Game of Thrones or how or why they do it. Clearly, some of their staff are still watching the show, even if the site as a whole disavows it. But do you HAVE to be so holier-than-thou about it? Do you HAVE to parade your self-appointed moral superiority over your choices in front of the entire world?

I don’t personally watch Game of Thrones – it’s not my cup of tea (I’m more of an Outlander girl myself). People have different reasons for watching or not watching certain shows. I’ve heard people decry GoT’s gore and violence and nudity and general depressing tone. I’ve heard people say that GoT is a great example of what happens when a civilization becomes totally godless and hopeless. And some just take it as knowing the difference between fiction and reality.

My reason for poking at TMS over this is because they made such an obnoxious point about never talking about the show again, but here they are – talking about the show, while also insisting that they really aren’t. Totally.

Ladies, get over yourselves and just have fun with what you want to have fun with. It’s okay. I promise, the ghost of Margaret Sanger isn’t going to haunt you until the end of eternity because of it.
