Donald Trump and Ted Cruz are in the middle of a fierce battle over Indiana. Both men have a lot on the line. If Trump wins, he essentially solidifies his position as the presumptive nominee. If Cruz pulls through, he’ll change the media’s narrative and take this thing one step closer to a contested convention– his only hope for victory.
Cruz has done it all. Announcing his pact-except-not-really with John Kasich. Naming Carly Fiorina as his VP. Scoring the endorsement of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.
If those things won’t do it, I don’t know what will.
If you’re anything like me, you’re probably wondering if any of this will impact voters. Are they going for it? Is it making a difference? Are things looking up?
Possibly. At least, according to a recent Clout Research poll.
The poll shows Trump ahead at 37 percent. Cruz is right behind him at 35 percent. In addition, FiveThirtyEight predicts that Trump has a 69 percent chance of winning Indiana’s Republican primary. You can read all about how they came to that conclusion here.
All of that information brings us to the current RCP average
Previous Indiana polls showed Trump enjoying a slight edge, and RCP’s current average reflects that.
Can Cruz pull through in Indiana? This race defies conventional wisdom, so I really can’t say.
Update: In a previous version of this post, I noted that FiveThirtyEight showed Cruz with a 65 percent chance of winning Indiana’s Republican primary. It updates daily, and I didn’t have the most recent update. It now reflects the current numbers. 🙂
