I’m just going to go out on a limb and say that trapping a university president in a police car for a hour might possibly be construed as a form of terrorism. A minor form, certainly. But it could qualify.
According to this, a massive mob of students from San Diego State University surrounded a police vehicle that was escorting the university’s president Elliot Hirshman from a student government ceremony. The students were upset over a flyer that showed up on campus criticizing the anti-Israel BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanction) movement. The flyer – which, by all accounts had nothing to do with the university itself – called out certain student groups (particularly Muslim groups) as being sympathetic to terrorists because they supported BDS measures –
The flyers direct students to Horowitz Freedom Center, a conservative organization that “protects students from indoctrination and intimidation and works to give conservative students a place in the marketplace of ideas from which they are otherwise excluded.”
“BDS – Boycott, Divest, Sanction; a Hamas-inspired genocidal campaign to destroy Israel, the world’s only Jewish state,” the posters read. “The following students and faculty at San Diego State have allied themselves with Palestinian terrorists to perpetrate BDS and Jew Hatred on this campus …”
The flyer listed seven students with titles like “BDS & SJP Activist” and “MSA Activist,” though media reports censored the actual names. BDS refers to Boycott, Divest, Sanction; SJP is Students for Justice in Palestine; and MSA is the Muslim Student Association – groups that have worked together as an anti-Israel coalition on campus.
“My friends are not terrorist, and if their names are being posted around campus that’s an issue of security,” student Jeanette Corona told the Union-Tribune. “No student should be demonized. … It’s (Hirshman’s) job to ensure the safety of all students on this campus.”
Corona and other students enraged by the flyers protested outside of a student government ceremony attended by Hirshman on campus yesterday. When the president exited to an awaiting campus police vehicle, students blocked its path and surrounded the car to demand an apology.
So, like any group of offended college kids, they swarmed a vehicle carrying the president of their school and demanded he apologize for something the university had no control over.
Yeeeeep.
In a sane world (which, yes, I realize we live in anything but), these students would have talked to the Horowitz Center and asked them if they knew anything about it. Or just asked around to find out who produced the flyers. I’m certain any number of faculty and staff – even President Hirshman himself – would have been happy to help them get to the bottom of this.
But nope. They went straight for the intimidation and rioting tactics. I mean, did Hirshman even KNOW about the flyers before this? And why is it solely HIS job to make sure that nothing on SDSU’s campus offends any of these emotional toddlers? Wouldn’t he have other things to do than fret about some random flyer that showed up on campus?
Now that they’ve pulled this stunt, I highly doubt he’d be inclined to help these students out, even if he does agree with them (I have no clue whether he does or not). The point is that this is NOT how you have a constructive dialogue or even debate these issues. But what do you expect from people who’d love to see Israel blown to bits?
