Since Target announced its controversial restroom/changing room policy, I’ve made a habit of periodically checking their Facebook page. The backlash is severe. People are angry. The opposition isn’t letting this go, and they shouldn’t. It’s ridiculous. Allowing individuals to choose a restroom or changing room based on gender identity alone creates so many unintended problems. This isn’t just about pleasing 0.3% of the population. This goes far beyond that.
Target allows individuals to choose a restroom based on their gender identity and gender identity alone. But what if someone claims to be mutogender (where your gender changes depending on the situation)? How does that work? They could literally say that their gender changes every time they have to go to the restroom. (Since it depends on the situation, you know.) Even though we KNOW creeps are going to use that to their advantage, we can’t question them, even if we KNOW they’re just being total creeps. Because we might possibly offend them. What if they really DO identify as mutogender? Then you’d be a bigot!
I think you see where I’m going with this.
Anyway, Target can’t catch a break. Even on its totally non-controversial posts, people are commenting like crazy. This woman commented on a photo for coconut curry soup. She asked this question:
And Target responded.
By avoiding the question, Target answered it. A man does not have to be transgender to use the women’s restroom or changing room.
Needless to say, Marni wasn’t satisfied with the answer Target provided.
Marni. Just watch this video. I think it’ll answer your question.
