Don’t freak out. I know a lot of women say that there are a ton of health benefits to eating your own placenta. Someone women do it in more refined ways (pill form), while others choose to make super delicious placenta fruit smoothies. Bottoms up.
Even if you’re a staunch placenta ingestion believer, you have to admit this is gross.
According to that sourcelink, Tom Maddock decided to celebrate the birth of his second daughter by making a placenta pizza and cocktails.
It was basically his chance at a do-over. You see, he drank his wife’s placenta after the birth of their first daughter, but it made him ill. This time he was going to get it right.
“I remember reading at school that it was common practice within some tribes to eat it so I never thought that was anything strange,” Maddock said. “When Amanda got pregnant I knew straight away that I wasn’t going to waste it – I wanted to do something with it, I just wasn’t sure what.”
“The first time I just blended it and drank it and it was pretty grim to be honest – you could just taste the blood and it was gristly and fatty,” he continued.
Barf.
Tom, 31, set to work looking for recipes and ended up turning the placenta into a pizza and a ‘daiquiri’ cocktail for the three of them to share.
Amanda, who is on maternity leave from her job as a legal secretary at Farleys Solicitors in Manchester, said: ‘When Tom blended my first placenta me and my friend Cat had a try.
‘It was sort of “I will if you will”. It tasted very metallic and she said if I have another child we’d go the whole hog and have a sit down meal, half-joking really.
‘But when we’d had my second daughter Nellie and Tom said he was looking for recipes I warned my mate he was serious.’
“Tom fried the placenta in onion and garlic and put loads of seasoning on so it just tasted like spicy liver, it was really tasty though,” his wife said. “And then he made a strawberry daiquiri, put some pepper in it and added some more blended up placenta – thankfully not breaking the blender this time. It was delicious. It just tasted like strawberry daiquiri.”
Here they are, in all their placenta-y glory.
Look at that pizza. My gag reflexes are seriously kicking in.
“When I tasted a bit on its own it had a similar taste and texture to liver but as soon as I put the garlic and onion with it, it was lovely,” Maddock said.
Nope. Never in 1000 years.
