According to this, USC held a ‘Consent Carnival’ as a way to educate students on how to interact with each other without committing sexual assault.
In other news, the ‘Consent Carnival’ is a thing now. Meaning the politics of sex have become so convoluted and so insane that colleges have to spend precious time and money educating students on the arbitrary rules of the hookup culture. Because social justice can’t seem to make up its mind about what’s okay and what’s not when it comes to sex.
The sourcelink describes a checklist provided at a “Kissing Booth” at the carnival (complete with a chocolate Hershey’s kiss – ’cause, get it?) that instructs students on how to respond when you’re kissing another person. Because we ALL have time to consult an outside source during a makeout session, don’t we –
On Thursday, the University of Southern California’s student government hosted a “Consent Carnival” that aimed to teach students how to properly hook-up under the “yes means yes” state law that requires so-called affirmative consent throughout any sexual encounter.
With that, a “Kissing Booth” at the event offered Hershey Kisses glued to little sheets of white paper that essentially explained how to properly kiss without committing sexual assault. The five-step checklist states on the front “what exactly does it mean to … ‘consent’ to a kiss?” and on the back states that “consent is”:
Affirmative: We’re really excited to share this kiss with you and we’re letting you know!
Coherent: We’re present and able to recognize exactly what’s happening when we give this kiss to you.
Willing: We made the decision to give you this kiss ourselves, without pressure or manipulation from you or anybody else.
Ongoing: Should you come back for another kiss, check in to see if we’d still like to give you one.
Mutual: Sure, we offered you a kiss, but that doesn’t mean you have to accept it. Coming over to our table doesn’t forfeit your right to say no.
Well, that just killed any kind of romantic or affectionate mood USC students were feeling toward one another to begin with. In that sense, perhaps the Consent Carnival did its job. Who’s gonna wanna get freaky with each other after that stupid lecture?
The discussion of “affirmative consent” reminds me of this video from last year of students in New York trying to define a similar law in that state and the rules they’re supposed to follow. Basically, you don’t have a written, signed, notarized form (plus a blood sample) giving consent for every minute of a sexual encounter, then you’re either raping someone or you’re being raped. It’s just as confusing and nutty as this stupid consent checklist –

And there’s this video of a police department in Britain explaining sex and consent with tea. If you can follow the line of discussion past the halfway point of this dumb thing, you’re better at deciphering social justice psychobabble than I am –
Not sure if people really get as excited over tea as they do sex. Then again, it is the British. Tea is like a religion over there.
This is where feminism has led us. Men and women aren’t able to have normal, rational, sane relationships without some stupid lecture about consent and lawyers following us around. We’re all enemies against one another and we should all be ashamed of just living.
