Ladies and gentlemen, Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy has come out as gay. And he wants you to know AAAAAALLLLL about his SUPER BRAVE decision to make the fact that he likes to bump uglies with dudes public knowledge. I’m sure you were stuck lying awake at night worrying about this information –
He gave an interview with ESPN Magazine and this is part of what he said –
The Olympic medalist revealed this in a cover story with ESPN the Magazine, sharing a link to the interview on his Twitter account and writing; ‘I am gay.’
The 24-year-old took home a silver medal at the Sochi games in Men’s Freestyle Skiing for his performance in the Slopestyle competition.
Kenworthy reveals in the interview that he wanted to wait until he was the best in the world at freestyle skiing to finally come out as gay.
‘I never got to be proud of what I did in Sochi because I felt so horrible about what I didn’t do,’ says Kenworthy.
‘I didn’t want to come out as the silver medalist from Sochi. I wanted to come out as the best freeskier in the world.’
Kenworthy says it was difficult at times on tour when he was asked if his girlfriend was in attendance and he had to say no – despite the fact that his boyfriend was there supporting him.
What? Was his agent worried that people would forget about an Olympic medalist? Though most people really don’t care about Olympic sports until the Olympics come around every two years (Winter and Summer Olympics alternate through their four-year cycles). And the only thing I remember about the Sochi Olympics was that there were all kinds of hilarious logistical problems leading up to the Games and then two weeks after the glorious worldwide celebration of peace and harmony and goodwill and sportsmanship… Russia invaded Crimea and Ukraine. So – yippee-skip.
Certainly, people are going to start “value signaling” in response to this news. They’re gonna want EVERYBODY to know how loving and supportive they are of Gus. Hashtags and Vines are going to start pouring in on Twitter of so many people that what Gus (and the whole world to know) they aren’t homophobic and this is how they’re gonna prove it! Maybe Gus’ll even a phone call from the President so he can steal the limelight over the news that Gus is attracted to dudes.
I’ve said this before – it’s gotten to the point that celebrities “coming out” is nothing more than a stupid publicity stunt. It’s not about telling the truth or giving homosexuals more visibility. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay marriage, for crying out loud! How much more visibility do you want? But they’ll still be called “brave” and “courageous” and get all kinds of media attention. However – I wonder how they’d react to a gay or lesbian person who decided they were going to “come out” as straight and leave the LGBTQ lifestyle behind?
Probably not very many hashtags or presidential phone calls for THAT hypothetical individual.
