Check Out What Flag This Restaurant Owner Is Flying After His City Took Theirs Down

A clever and competent reader sent us this story. And it is a pretty bold statement.

According to this, the owner of the Big Chief Diner in Glencoe, Alabama, started flying the Christian flag after activists pressure the City of Glencoe to take down the Christian flag that, until about three weeks ago, had been flying in front of the city offices since the 1990s. From the article –

The City of Glencoe, just outside of Gadsden, had been flying the Christian flag since the 1990s. The Freedom From Religion Foundation, based in Wisconsin, sent a letter to the city in March protesting the flag, according to the foundation website. The foundation last year challenged nativity scenes in Rainbow City and Glencoe, and Christmas parades and football prayers in Piedmont.

 

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, on its website, states its purpose as promoting "the constitutional principle of separation of state and church" and educating the public on issues related to freethinking. Glencoe city officials said the flag came down about three weeks ago because the cost of a legal fight would probably be more than the city could afford.

 

 

And this is what the business owner, Jeff Word, had to say about his decision to fly the flag outside his diner –

On a sign in front of the restaurant are the words, "I may not always act like it but this business is Christian owned."

 

Word said he wrestled with the idea of flying the flag all through Monday night. He had earlier stated on social media that, while he supported the Christian flag, he did not think he would fly it.

 

"I didn't really sleep good," he said. "It bothered me. I talked to my wife about it, and she said, 'You've got to take a stand.' That surprised me, because usually she's the one getting on to me because I'm taking a stand about something."

 

Word said he believes by flying the flag, he is "standing in the gap."

 

"I think our freedoms are leaving us gradually, as we once knew them," he said. "It was one person that took prayer out of school. I felt like I needed to be that 'one person' in this case. I feel like I'm a private businessman and it's my right to fly the flag."

Personally, I think this is is a pretty ingenious idea. And it's probably what it's going to take in the long run. Christians are simply going to end up flying the Christian flag and putting up Christian symbols and pictures in their privately-owned businesses. I think the days of relying on government to protect religious freedom are close to being over. But if enough Christian people speak out and defend their right and ability to proclaim their religious beliefs – anti-religion people can't take down EVERYBODY like they did the Sweet Cakes Bakery in Oregon. If there are enough Christians doing what Jeff Word is doing – that a crapton of litigation that these Freedom From Religion nuts are going to have to bring to the courts. Eventually the courts will finally tell them they're crazy and to pack it up and go home.

At least, one can hope. It's a heck of a lot better than relying on the Supreme Court to follow the Constitution.
