Earlier today, Ted Cruz sat down for an interview with Martha MacCallum on America’s Newsroom, and it was pretty great.
What I love about Cruz is his ability to go beyond talking points. So often, candidates do so many interviews with so many people that everything starts sounding the same. But not with Cruz. He answers questions directly with confidence. That’s something that I miss in a leader. (No. Obama’s cocky, not confident. There’s a difference.)
MacCallum asked Cruz about those who say he's too extreme and “too conservative.” She also asked him why he doesn’t seem too focused on raking in the independents, and his answer couldn’t be more spot on.
"I believe in common sense conservative values," Cruz said. "I believe in, for example, live within your means. Don’t bankrupt our kids and grandkids. Follow the Constitution. It is only in Washington that those are viewed as radical or extreme views. In the rest of America, those bring people together. Those are values that bring together Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Libertarians….I think they way you win the independent voter is by standing clearly for common sense values."
Yep. Oh, and did you catch that? His crowds are twice as large as the other candidates. Granted, it’s early, but that’s definitely a reason for some excitement in the Cruz camp. But this line is my favorite– "It is only in Washington that those are viewed as radical or extreme views."
