Every morning, Mock and I scour the interwebs for interesting stories to write about here at COTR. And one of the things I came across was this doozy. It's basically an entire article about one woman's struggle with whether or not she should wear yoga pants and leggings, and how she's ultimately decided to not wear them anymore, because they cause men to "think lustful thoughts."
Basically, yoga pants and leggings are sinful, y'all.
Sigh.
She had this to say:
“For the past several months, I have been having a conviction weighing heavy on my heart. I tried ignoring it for as long as I could until one day a conversation came up amongst myself and a few others (both men and women),” she wrote.
“The conversation was about leggings and how when women wear them it creates a stronger attraction for a man to look at a woman’s body and may cause them to think lustful thoughts.
“
I instantly felt conviction come over me even stronger. Not that I wasn’t feeling it earlier, or else I wouldn’t have thought twice about the conversation, but after talking to Dale, it hit me a lot harder,” she said. “
If it is difficult for my husband who loves, honors, and respects me to keep his eyes focused ahead, then how much more difficult could it be for a man that may not have the same self-control?”
S
he continued, “Sure, if a man wants to look, they are going to look, but why entice them?”
With YOGA PANTS? Are yoga pants THAT sexy that they require you or other women to STOP wearing them for fear of being what – cheated on by your husband? Do men lack that much self control? Because if they do, women need to throw their butts to the curb. And if you're worried about a dude sexually assaulting you as a direct result of you wearing yoga pants, no. I suggest women invest in a firearm and get some training for it. But to stop wearing yoga pants because you're afraid of MEN'S SHORTCOMINGS? Because you're afraid of men not having any self control?
Come on.
About 3/4 of the article made me shake my head so much and wonder what year I was living in (2015, right?) that I had to share it with Mock, our Producer, Matt, and another Producer in our office, "Big Matt" with the Subject line of my email "I can't believe I just read this whole article." Alas, I did read the whole thing, and I believe that sharing it made that action more real to me. And now I'm writing about it, because I am still in a bit of shock that we're talking about this.
And listen – I'm not trying to be condescending here. I'm really not – I promise. I'm a Christian, after all. I believe in God, Jesus Christ, but I simultaneously believe wholeheartedly in yoga pants. Especially ones from Old Navy that cost 25 bucks and have a lot of built in whatever-fabric-that is that sucks in some stuff on my backside and makes it look like it's a few years younger. It's miraculous, and I think that's divine, indeed. I believe in the divine.
I'm also a very busy working mom who has to schedule in workouts when I can – this is a laughable feat most days I want to work out, believe me – and doing so sometimes requires me wearing leggings and yoga pants during weird hours of the day to do errands and in between work obligations and before and after radio show prep and on weekends. If I have them on, I know that I can quickly get a workout in, because I've already got clothes on to do it. No excuses there. Leggings and yoga pants are awesome that way. Some dude at the end of the source article had the nerve to say, "To be frank yoga pants and Leggings were not at all designed for comfort as their primary use. Even actual exercise in them is not what the initial idea for them are. They are designed to draw attention to the wearer.”
No, dude. You're WRONG. Try them on sometime, and then we'll chat. Better yet, try being A WOMAN SOMETIME AND HAVING AN ACTUAL DISCUSSION ABOUT YOU NOT BEING ABLE TO WEAR PANTS THAT COVER YOUR ENTIRE LOWER HALF IN THE YEAR 2015, and then we'll talk.
Wow.
So yeah. I believe in yoga pants. And I believe in God. I also believe in tattoos and bacon and AC/DC and Vegas and cinnamon whiskey. And you know what? I happen to believe that Jesus still loves me, regardless of the fact that I partake in all of those things while wearing my yoga pants. In fact, when I put on my yoga pants, I look in the mirror and think of how comfortable and versatile they are and what a GIFT those yoga pants are to my comfort and lifestyle and ease of getting ready in the morning, and I often say to myself, "Self…Jesus REALLY DOES LOVE ME." I also thank God that I'm an American woman who can wear yoga pants whenever I darn well please.
And I'm especially thankful for those yoga pants now, because people in this country have gone and lost their freaking minds. Do we not have other things to worry about besides WOMEN IN YOGA PANTS, conservative folks?
Good Lord.
