According to this, professors at UCLA are not to correct the grammar, punctuation and capitalization of assignments turned in by minority students, because THAT IS RACIST. And furthermore, it's an example of "micro-aggression."
I'm not making this up. There's a student group called "Call 2 Action: Graduate Students of Color" who are BESIDE THEMSELVES that a professor would dare to…well…TEACH. They said, "A hostile campus climate has been the norm for Students of Color in this class throughout the quarter as our epistemological and methodological commitments have been repeatedly questioned by our classmates and our instructor. [The] barrage of questions by white colleagues and the grammar ‘lessons’ by the professor have contributed to a hostile class climate.”
They staged a sit-in in the classroom, and 25 students participated.
The professor in question is a dude by the name of Val Rust, and he responded to the racism accusation in a statement that read in part: "I have attempted to be rather thorough on the papers and am particularly concerned that they do a good job with their bibliographies and citations, and these students apparently don’t feel that is appropriate.”
One particularly egregious example of Rust's racism was when he told one student that she shouldn't capitalize the word "indigenous" in her papers. CAN YOU EVEN BELIEVE THE AUDACITY Rust had to do that? He might as well have punched her in the face and called her the n-word. Because that's basically the same thing. (/end sarc.)
GAWD.
