According to this article, David Miliband, Britain’s Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, has expressed his disappointment that the Obama administration didn’t tell him about transferring Guantanamo Bay inmates to Bermuda.
Well, the administration told them – but they sort of waited until the inmates were on the plane. And apparently, in Obama time, that was supposed to be enough.
Um, OK.
A senior State Department official said this diplomatic understatement masked a real anger over the Obama administration’s oversight among British officials, telling ABC News: “They’re pissed”.
So, the State Department did a little dance and rebutted the “they’re pissed” feelings by saying that they didn’t MEAN to overstep Britain by dealing directly with Bermuda (even though Bermuda is a territory under the sovereignty of the UK), and that they feel “confident” that they can work this all out with Britain.
Britain felt slighted, they were pissed, and now the Obama administration feels confident that they can get back in their good graces.
I mean, to hell with an actual plan for this whole Guantanamo thing. We should just divert the pissiness and get them all iPods…
