MSNBC Analyst: If Jesus Is So Great, Why Aren’t Conservative Christians Nicer?

We have to take a quick break from the Mueller report to talk about this, because it really gets me going.

MSNBC political analyst Zerlina Maxwell recently participated in a discussion on MSNBC Live.  The conversation centered around presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg and how he handles himself.

She said he’s “demonstrating how to actually be a Christian.”

“I think that we are going to see a number of protests. Anti-abortion protesters are going to show up at events throughout this primary,” she said. “I have no doubt. So I think it’s a test for Democrats, including Mayor Pete, about how they can handle that type of direct adversity.”

“While I am a progressive feminist, I have often debated folks who are citing the Bible and shouting out Sodom and Gomorrah, that’s something they always say. And I would always push back and say, ‘Listen, if Jesus is so great, why weren’t you nicer? Why aren’t you kinder? Why aren’t you more fair and kind to your neighbor and to your fellow human beings?'” she continued.

“Jesus needs new PR. I always had that line growing up,” she added. “Because, honestly, I think what Mayor Pete is doing, he is demonstrating how to actually be a Christian, to embrace people, to be more compassionate. I think that’s an example that crosses partisan boundaries actually.”

I’ve heard that sort of argument so many times before, and I think there’s a gross misunderstanding here.

Serving Jesus doesn’t turn you into a spineless “you do you” wimp. Quite the contrary. We’re to speak the truth in love, and that’s where the main problem lies. Yes– many Christians have dropped the ball on their delivery methods. Shouting “Sodom and Gomorrah” is not a legitimate argument when presenting your case with people who don’t have a relationship with the Lord in the first place. It’s always important for Christians to remember that it’s the GOODNESS of God that leads men to repentance– not fire and brimstone. That aside– what’s the saying?– truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth. So it’s easy for liberals to say, “Wowowow you’re so hateful! Way to be like Jesus!” because they hate the truth.  They don’t want to hear it. Jesus warned us about this specifically.

“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.  If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.”

And that’s where Christians need to step up their game. They need to stop taking everything so personally. It’s not about us. Stop lashing out with unfettered human emotions. Ask God for wisdom and view it with your spiritual lens.

Jesus wasn’t a spineless wimp. He hung out with the “wrong” crowd and revealed Himself to screw-ups and misfits. He had compassion on those who asked for it. He never ONCE turned any desperate individual away and took authority in dark situations. We’re called to do the same. Jesus was radical. He wasn’t shy. He didn’t beat around the bush, and He loved fearlessly.

So yeah. Be like Jesus.
