Family Drives from Florida to Canada with Dead Body in Vehicle to Avoid Paying Health Care Costs

A Canadian family went on a lovely vacation to Florida (they drove there), but on their way home, the “87-year-old patriarch” died of a heart attack. They reached the U.S.-Canada border on March 31, and authorities discovered the dead 87 year old. They believe he died the day prior.

When Fernand Drapeau’s wife and son reached the U.S.-Canada border on March 31, authorities stopped and searched the car. Inside they found Drapeau, who appeared to have died from a heart attack at least a day before arriving at the border, the Vancouver Sun reported.

I’ve never had anything that traumatic happen to me, but one time on my way to New Hampshire with my family and dogs, and one of my dogs– my old boy Gideon (he was a 17-year-old Shih Tzu)– died in the car. I mean, he was sickly and old, but it was really crappy timing. My mom and I were really upset and knew there was NO WAY we could ride in the car with a dead dog, so we dropped him off at an animal hospital and had his remains shipped to us afterward. We were so upset. There was no way I could ride in a van with my dead dog. Needless to say, I can’t IMAGINE doing that with a human I care about. I would’ve rushed to the hospital immediately to see if they could be revived.

Why didn’t this family do that? Health care costs.

The family cited the high cost of U.S. health care, plus the cost of shipping the body back to Quebec as the reason for not stopping at a hospital, CTV News reported.

Border officials said it was the first time that such an incident has occurred.

Not a good enough excuse for me. I’m traumatized just reading this.
