Officials Float The Idea Of BANNING CARS Following Terrorist Attacks In The UK

After a tragedy occurs, we try to remind people of one simple fact: The objects used to inflict harm are not to blame. Guns don’t kill people. People kill people. Knives don’t kill people. People kill people. Cars don’t kill people. People kill people.

Banning various inanimate objects is a crappy “solution” and does nothing to address the root of the issue. Usually, we only hear about banning inanimate objects when a gun is involved in the crime. But lately, terrorists have been using vehicles to hurt innocent people. We jokingly say, “Wow– does this mean we should ban cars?” because it demonstrates the absurdity of their general argument.

Unfortunately, the joke is on us, because some politicians think that may be a good idea.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling told Sky News that “there may well be a case” for banning cars in certain parts of Westminster, following the latest attack.

Mr Grayling told Sky News “there may well be a case for pedestrianisation” of part of Parliament Square.

But, the cabinet minister added: “We’ve got to do that carefully, we shouldn’t just take an on-the-hoof response to what was a very disturbing incident.”

The transport secretary spoke after Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick revealed she expects hold talks with security services about whether vehicle traffic could be banned from parts of Westminster.

She admitted on Wednesday that vehicles appear to have become a “weapon of choice” for terrorists across Europe, as she raised the prospect of greater measures to protect London’s most famous sites.

Seriously guys? That’s your answer? Banning CARS? The answer involves punishing everyone who drives in Westminster? This is utterly absurd. Not to mention that sidewalks are already “car-free” zones.

“You will notice that the security around parliament both in terms of armed officers and police officers and physical barriers has been further enhanced over the last several months and there is more to come on that in further months,” Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said. “Whether that area outside should be pedestrianized further, there should be further physical works done, I think is a matter that will be discussed no doubt between parliamentary authorities, us, the intelligence agencies and indeed the local authorities and the mayor.”

Wait– here’s the part where she totally contradicts herself.

“Terrorists want us to completely change our way of life, they want us to be afraid and they want us to stop doing what we want to do to lead a normal life in the UK,” she said. “We are not going to give in, we are not going to just change our lifestyle.”

But you basically just said that you’re considering banning cars in certain areas. Is that not changing your lifestyle?

“But, it is important we take reasonable measures – as I think we have been doing over the last several months – to try and make sure that the most iconic sites, including those in central London, are well protected,” she added.

Banning cars. It’s on the table. It should come to no surprise that London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan is on board.

“I think there would be lots of challenges if we would do the whole square. It is a thoroughfare for cars, vehicles and commercial deliveries going through London. So it’s possible to have a designed solution … in keeping our buildings and people as safe as we can do,” he told BBC radio. “And also not losing what is so wonderful about our city that is a vibrant democracy, people can walk around safely.”

I should’ve known that “joke” would catch up with us one day.
