James Gunn will no longer direct the new “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie due to a series of decade-old “jokes” about pedophilia and rape. They’re pretty gross.
As I said before, I see both sides. On one hand, should his career be destroyed over awful stuff he said years ago? People can change. On the other hand, what he tweeted back then was pretty bad.
Reactions have been mixed.
Wow. These #JamesGunn tweets are just horrible. Child rape is no laughing matter. As Texas SG, I handled far too many child sexual assaults. Truly evil. I’m glad Disney fired him, but if these tweets are true, he needs to be prosecuted. pic.twitter.com/1IgHC18J4x

I think @JamesGunn is an a**hole, as my exchange with him earlier this week made clear. I also think that firing him for vile old joke tweets is bad precedent and a mistake. There is no limiting principle to the outrage mob. https://t.co/wtSFzrIUER

I will have more to say but for right now all I will say is this..@JamesGunn is one of the most loving, caring, good natured people I have ever met. He’s gentle and kind and cares deeply for people and animals. He’s made mistakes. We all have. Im NOT ok with what’s happening to him

There’s been one VERY unlikely individual coming to Gunn’s defense. Glenn Beck.
@jamesGunn I will stand for you.We all make mistakes, we must come together as each of us grow and change.Forgive others in hope that they will forgive themselves and others too. Reach beyond your comfort zone and be kind. You don’t need my forgiveness J.G, but I offer friendship https://t.co/qaD6snFPhM

If you mean standing up for justice only to have my head kicked in? Yep, it is what I do apparently. You should try it sometime. It’s not fun, but it is what people who actually mean the words in the bill of rights do.

I refuse to sit when others are being wrongly accused and destroyed. First they came for the trade unionist ….

Great. I love this stance! ‘I am not sure what it was, but off with his head’. It was a number of very dark jokes, followed by an apology in 2012, years of not joking like that only to be fired because of a mob. I know he started it, but why become that which we despise?

Yep. Me too. Fortunately, there are more people like me than you. Mobs and bullies often show up. We all saw them in grade school and some times god forbid, they grow up to be Stalin. It only takes a few who are willing to stand and take the beating to change the world.

I just find all of this so incredibly fascinating. There are people on the right and left who support Gunn and people on the right and left who think he’s getting what he deserves.
Interesting, no?
