This is really getting out of hand.
Maryland State Sen. Cheryl Kagan is accusing a lobbyist– Gil Genn– of groping her. She said he “slid it [his hand] down to my tush.” She said the entire encounter lasted over a minute.
“He comes over, he puts his hand on my back, he keeps it there for a while, slides it all the way down and does indeed, as I said, graze my butt, my tush,” she said.
“I shifted my body a little bit and I gave my former chief of staff a kind of bug-eyed like, ‘Oh dear God, make this stop, make him go away,'” she added.
Genn adamantly denied her allegations. He acknowledged that he put his hand on her back (which is a common friendly gesture that FREQUENTLY happens at those kind of events), but it was nothing more than that.
“During the entire one minute and 26 seconds, I never ran my hand down her back,’ Genn said in a statement. “I never grabbed her tush. I never groped her.”
However, Kagan is remaining firm (sorry about the unintentional butt joke…but not really). She said Genn has a grope-y reputation.
“Gil Genn has been doing this for a very long time,” she said. “He is a serial harasser and groper.”
WELL. There’s security footage of this “incident.” Let’s take a look, shall we?
Does this look like some kind of gropey nightmare to you? Because I’m not really seeing it. I mean…this screengrab looks kinda Joe Biden-y…
…but it doesn’t look like full blown gropage to me.
Kagan believes this video vindicates her.
‘I feel vindicated that each and every aspect of Mr. Genn’s denial has been revealed to be false,’ Kagan said at the news conference.
Timothy Maloney, Genn’s lawyer, said his office has enlarged still photographs of the video that show Genn never touched Kagan’s buttocks.
‘It’s the tale of the tape,’ Maloney said. ‘People can have their own opinions, but there’s only one tape and it’s very clear.’
Genn, in his statement Tuesday, noted that the video shows he did not remember all aspects of the encounter.
Yeah. I’m guessing because it was SO brief and SO not a big deal in his mind.
‘Of the hundreds of one-minute interactions during the day, I never imagined I would have to reconstruct this late-night one, step-by-step, second by second at some time in the future,’ said Genn, who noted he has known Kagan for more than 30 years.
More than 30 years? Yeah…if she’s known that he’s a serial harasser and groper, why didn’t she say anything? She only decided to “come out” when it became cool to do so. That’s suspicious.
Kagan has filed a complaint with the human resources department of the Maryland General Assembly, but because the legislature’s sexual harassment policy doesn’t now cover lobbyists, she said it’s unclear what will happen.
‘The head of HR is navigating this as we all are. It’s the first case of its kind,’ Kagan said.
Opinions? I know you have ’em.
