Full disclosure. I freaking LOVE Bruno Mars. I love his music. I love his moves. I love his performances. I love his swag.
I have a really diverse taste in music. I go through phases. A few weeks ago, I was on a Hank Williams tear. Sometimes, I relive my Paramore days. Other times, you’ll hear me listening to Nickel Creek, Lyle Lovett or 38 Special.
I can appreciate everything (except screamo and rap), and that’s OK. I don’t choose my music based on race or gender. I like what I like. But not everyone else views music that way.
Some chick went OFF about how Bruno Mars is a POS because he’s appropriating black culture and using it to make money, even though he’s not black. The Huffington Post did some digging on Bruno Mars’ race and came to this conclusion. He is:
But short answer? He was born in Hawaii. His father is Puerto Rican and his mother is from the Philippines.
So no. He’s not black, which OBVIOUSLY means he needs to step off and stop producing wonderfully groovy music. Just listen to this total brat.
this is why i hate bruno mars @seren_sensei says it all pic.twitter.com/CRLktsA2ea

BTW– that’s only a partial version. There’s a longer video. The panel discussed this for at least a half hour.
I’m so confused. Shouldn’t these race baiters be HAPPY that everyone is loving “black” music? Isn’t that a compliment?
You just cannot win with these people.
She went on to say that Bruno Mars isn’t original. He’s basically a karaoke singer. And I’m just wondering if she’s seen ANY of these performances.
Question. Are only black people allowed to dance? Are only black people allowed to be GROOVY? Does this chick not realize how insufferable she sounds right now?
I’m just gong to say it. This chick needs to chill. Races don’t get to “own” music. If I could wail like Mariah Carey and wanted to become an R&B singer tomorrow, I wouldn’t feel guilty about it, because music isn’t something that can be OWNED by one particular race. I’m not saying certain races don’t develop and perfect certain genres of music, but they don’t get to “own” it. All races are allowed to enjoy it, and all races are allowed to ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE in any genre of music they damn well please.
I can’t believe this discussion is even necessary.
I’m pleased to see that Bruno’s seeing an overwhelming amount of support from people on Twitter.
They sat around a whole hour to discuss whether or not Bruno Mars is stealing Black culture. Bruh… pic.twitter.com/SapWvW2wlX

Y’all are just trying to find reasons to hate Bruno Mars.. if he’s not your cup of tea then he’s not your cup of tea but to say that he isn’t talented and appropriates black culture to validate your argument is wack.. just say you don’t like him and move on

That poor woman thinks that Bruno Mars isn’t an original artist because he drew from Black music influences to make his own art… Umm… That’s what Michael Jackson did. That’s what Prince did. Shit, that’s what JAMES BROWN did. Y’all DO know James Brown borrowed from rivals?

yall hate Bruno Mars cuz yall are HATERS. the end. pic.twitter.com/nwNaSQ7ttU

The Bruno Mars hate is disgusting. People have no valid reasoning whatsoever. But then again “we” always find a reason smh

Now that that’s out of the way, who is out here talking crazy about Bruno Mars. I got time. pic.twitter.com/BeP4RQrEuf

Do these clowns recognize that most of the credited songwriters & producers of Bruno Mars album are African American? I know because I am one of them. Get a life people

That video clip about Bruno Mars & appropriation… pic.twitter.com/BGYQHJb79Z

I didn’t watch the video of that girl’s entire Bruno Mars take because I have sense, but it takes a special person to make several points in 25 seconds and be wrong on all of them.

So it looks to me like one girl decided to spew hatred towards Bruno Mars by insinuating that he’s a “culture vulture”.
And the other 99.9% of Twitter is defending him.
Which goes to show that you CANNOT attack true talent.

I wonder how it feels to wake up and be mad at Bruno Mars
— Ivie Ani (@ivieani) March 9, 2018
The thought that Bruno Mars has to steal to be successful is hilarious. That man is walking raw talent. He could literally turn the national anthem into a top 40 hit.
— Anthony (@TrillestAC) March 9, 2018
Everything ain’t about race. Sometimes it’s just about somebody being talented and getting the acclaim they damn well deserve. Bruno Mars deserves every award he’s received thus far. Period.
— Anthony (@TrillestAC) March 9, 2018
Why is Bruno Mars trending? Is it because he makes good music for everyone?? Didn’t Michael Jackson do the same? Music is universal…please stop. pic.twitter.com/vIxVzNoLYT

Thank you! Enough dividing. It’s getting old.
WE LOVE YOU BRUNO.
PS– I would die if Bruno winked at me IRL.
