Texas sheriff Javier Salazar is the sheriff who threatened to bring criminal charges against Ron DeSantis following the re-relocation of 48 Venezuelan immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard last month. He made quite a to-do about announced that he had “officially opened a criminal investigation against the individual(s) who lured and transported 48 migrants,” saying they were “abandoned” and “left to fend for themselves in Martha’s Vineyard” after being “lured.”
DeSantis fired back that every one of the migrants has “signed consent forms” and were given a packet of information about available services and resources. But Salazar apparently hasn’t been deterred.
The Guardian reported that Javier Salazar has officially “certified that 48 migrants who were infoluntarily flown to Martha’s Vineyard were victims of a crime, a procedure that would immediately qualify them for a US visa or green card.”
“The “certification” of a crime is required for the processing of the U-visa, and involves confirmation that a “qualifying” crime – which includes everything from sexual assault to female genital mutilation to various forms of kidnapping – has taken place, that the victim has cooperated in the investigation and that they will probably assist in the identification of the criminal activity.
The sheriff filed the certification under “unlawful criminal restraint”, his office confirmed.
“Based upon the claims of migrants being transported from Bexar county under false pretenses, we are investigating this case as possible Unlawful Restraint,” Salazar said in a written statement. “We have submitted documentation through the federal system to ensure the migrants’ availability as witnesses during the investigation.””
Massachusetts attorney Rachel Self, who is coordinating with Salazar on the acquisition of U-visas for the migrants, says the certification as victims of a crime will help the migrants “to process and heal from the incredibly traumatic experiences they have suffered as a result of the cruel, heartless acts committed against them.”
Everyone’s acting like this was an incredibly cruel and horrific thing that was done to these migrants, but I just don’t agree. They were here illegally. They broke all our laws to be here illegally and basically threw themselves on our mercy to be responsible for them and care for them despite breaking all of our laws to get here. Texas border towns and facilities are currently overwhelmed and have extremely limited resources to assist the millions of immigrants illegally flooding into the country. So these immigrants got an all-expenses-paid flight to the incredibly upscale community of Martha’s Vineyard, where there are resources and programs designed specifically to support their sanctuary status, and which aren’t overwhelmed by millions of illegal immigrants. If DeSantis was honest about how things went down, and I suspect he thoroughly covered all his bases before doing this, then they not only signed consent to do this but also received information about all the things available to help them land on their feet. Honestly, sounds like a pretty sweet deal, all things considered.
But leave it to leftists to try to turn everyone into a victim. Victimhood is integral to the leftist sense of identity, so it’s only natural that they’d try to certify these migrants as victims.
