According to Felipe Romero, a spokesperson for Brownsville, Texas, a U.S.-Mexico border city, 108 illegal immigrants have crossed the border, tested positive for Covid-19, and been released into the United States to travel the country as desired.
Romero said that the 108 positive cases represent 6.3% of the number of total migrants who have received rapid Covid testing since January 25 at a city bus station used for the release of immigrants who have crossed the border into the country.
Additionally, Brownsville, Texas stated the city does not have the authority to restrict the travel of the Covid-positive migrants. Once released, they are free to travel the country.
Some migrants explained to Noticias Telemundo Investiga that they were tested at the border city bus station, notified of their positive status but given no documentation of their positive result, and then released into the public. Migrants have stated their plans to travel to North Carolina, Maryland, and New Jersey.
White House sources confirmed to Fox News that they are aware of the Covid-positive migrants being permitted to travel. But are they going to do anything about it? Are they just totally cool with illegal immigrants being released into a country that is struggling to recover?
In a recent press briefing, one reporter asked Secretary Mayorkas,
“Mr. Secretary, in South Texas, several city officials are requesting COVID tests from the state of Texas for migrants. What plan is DHS putting in place to do COVID testing for migrants?”
Secretary Mayorkas responded,
“As a matter of process, individuals of family units are brought into ICE custody. They are tested. ICE has the capability to test them; to isolate and quarantine them, as the results so dictate; and then to address their needs as the immigration process provides.”
But isolation and quarantine don’t seem to actually be happening.
And if 108 people tested positive, that means that only 1,714 people were tested. What about the others? How many of those were positive? And while we’re trying to recover our economy and return to a normally-functioning society, is it good judgement to allow this to happen?
I know an American couple that vacationed in Mexico just last week. They were required to provide documentation of a negative Covid test obtained within three days of their re-entry into the United States. If they tested positive, they would have to quarantine in Mexico.
So why are we holding legal U.S. citizens to a different standard than illegal immigrants entering the country?
Why are legal U.S. citizens required to obtain a negative Covid test in order to enter the country but illegal immigrants are not?
