President Trump has called off the Republican National Convention that was scheduled to take place in Jacksonville, Florida in August.
There will be no hoopla.
No dramatic entrance like 2016.
Breitbart reported on the cancellation:
“I just felt that it was wrong to have people to go to a hot spot,” Trump said.
Trump said that his plans for his acceptance speech were still underway and that he would announce them in the future.
The planned first night of the convention in Charlotte, NC with delegates would still take place, Trump confirmed, but that the larger more crowded celebration in Jacksonville would be canceled
He previewed other online events after he was nominated.
“We won’t do a big, crowded convention per se,” Trump said. “It’s just not the right time for that. I care deeply about the people in Florida, and everywhere else, frankly, in this country, and people in the world.”
President Trump really had no choice. With Florida being a current hotspot, it would look awfully bad politically to host what is really just a big party. Also, it truly would put all the attendees and people working the convention at risk of contracting the virus.
The conventions are fun for the party and political junkies. Sure, a lot of Americans tune in to hear the speech of the nominee. But no one is going to change their vote based on a canceled convention.
Whether or not the virus is as dangerous as the media hypes it up to be, a lot of people are scared. President Trump has to work with that fact. A disastrous outbreak due to holding a convention, or the appearance of a callous disregard for the outbreak, however, could swing some votes.
Trump did what he had to do. It’s just unfortunate that Biden is being allowed to skate through this campaign, almost completely out of public view. The debates MUST happen. The American people deserve to see both candidates go toe to toe.
