UCLA Professor Suspended After Reportedly Refusing Special Treatment to Exempt Black Students From Final Exams In the Wake Of George Floyd’s Death

UCLA professor is reportedly being investigated for discrimination and under police protection after refusing a request to exempt black students from final exams in the wake of George Floyd’s death, according to Fox News.

He did an ouchy to their feelings.

Gordon Klein has been an accounting professor at UCLA Los Angeles since 1981. He received an email from black students requesting him to, “give black students special treatment, given the tragedy in Minnesota.” They apparently requested either a “no-harm” final, shorter exam, or longer deadline.

The pansy students whined, requesting special exemptions because of “traumas, we have been placed in a position where we must choose between actively supporting our black classmates or focusing on finishing up our spring quarter. We believe that remaining neutral in times of injustice brings power to the oppressor and therefore staying silent is not an option.”

Klein minced no words or sentiment in his reply.

“Thanks for your suggestion in your email below that I give black students special treatment, given the tragedy in Minnesota. Do you know the names of the classmates that are black? How can I identify them since we’ve been having online classes only? Are there any students that may be of mixed parentage, such as half black-half Asian? What do you suggest I do with respect to them? A full concession or just half? Also, do you have any idea if any students are from Minneapolis? I assume that they probably are especially devastated as well. I am thinking that a white student from there might be possibly even more devastated by this, especially because some might think that they’re racist even if they are not. My TA is from Minneapolis, so if you don’t know, I can probably ask her. Can you guide me on how you think I should achieve a ‘no-harm’ outcome since our sole course grade is from a final exam only? One last thing strikes me: Remember that MLK famously said that people should not be evaluated based on the ‘color of their skin.’ Do you think that your request would run afoul of MLK’s admonition? Thanks, G. Klein.”

I am in love with this man. He clearly does not give two craps.

His brutally honest reply absolutely could not be tolerated. Racism!

I did not miss one final exam in college. If I did have to miss, it would have been only if I was very sick, if a close family member was on their deathbed, or I was at a funeral.

Hopefully, Professor Klein is tenured because the backlash has been swift and intense.

As of Tuesday, 19,964 individuals signed an online petition to “Fire UCLA Professor Gordon Klein.” He was suspended by the school which assigned all his courses to a fellow professor, and, as The Washington Free Beacon reported on Tuesday, he is now living under police protection, having faced threats of violence.

A spokesperson for the school told Inside Higher Ed: “Respect and equality for all are core principles at UCLA Anderson. It is deeply disturbing to learn of this email, which we are investigating. We apologize to the student who received it and to all those who have been as upset and offended by it as we are ourselves.”

Honestly, I get that the students want to protest and be part of the cause. However, I do not think that should preclude them from studying for their tests and taking their final exams. There are many hours in a day and the “children” need to learn to walk and chew gum at the same time.
