By the time my currently non-existent children are college age, it’s probably going to be SO BAD that I would never even dream of having them step foot on a college campus. I’m hoping I’m wrong. Maybe we’ll truly push back this ridiculous safe space culture. Can we defeat the snowflake generation within the next 20-25 years? I hope so. But given the way things are going right now, I’m not getting my hopes up.
That being said, “nap-ins.” It’s A Thing.
Southern Illinois University is hosting “nap-ins” at the library, where students can gather to sleep for two hours and dream about diversity. Again, I’m not exaggerating here. This is an Actual Thing.
According to the student-run newspaper The Daily Egyptian, the “nap-ins” are actually part of the “Dreaming Diversity Art Installation.” Yep. This is a weird offshoot of performance art. They’re hoping the nap-ins will “internally generate student dreams of diversity.” Because you can pick and choose what you dream about, ya know.
“The nap-ins are part of the internal journey to diversity,” student organizer Marissa Amposta said, according to Daily Wire. “All dreams start while sleeping.”
“All dreams start while sleeping.” That sentence isn’t nearly as wise as she thinks it is.
Participating students are encouraged to write down their dreams too. (If this is beginning to sound like a kindergarten project, it’s because it basically is a kindergarten project.)
“A labyrinth will also be set up in the rotunda surrounding the scroll to ‘help guide students to their dreams,'” Amposta told The Daily Egyptian.
Afterward, organizers will use the documented dreams as a topic of a women’s panel hosted by two of the most useless departments on campus (in my opinion, anyway): The arts department and the women, gender and sexuality studies department. Way to keep up those useless degree stereotypes, SIU. Way. To. Go.
Crazy huh? I had no idea that naps were the answer to all of our problems.
Their basic line of reasoning is as follows: Naps equal dreaming. Dreaming evokes feelings. Feelings (whether rational or irrational) will solve all of our problems. College students. Changing the world, one nap at a time.
People are paying to go to this school and do this. Let that simmer.
