U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, better known as ICE, is planning raids on various cities, targeting those who have received deportation orders.
“If you’re here illegally, then you should be removed,” Mark Morgan, acting director of ICE, told reporters. “And in this case, that includes families.”
ICE is expected to target around 2,000 families in 10 cities across the country, most of which are run by Democrats. Mayors in Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles, among other cities, have spoken out against the raids, claiming they will not cooperate with federal authorities.
“Los Angeles will always stand with our immigrant brothers and sisters, and our law enforcement officers will never participate in these actions,” [LA Mayor Eric] Garcetti said.” “No Angeleno should ever have to fear being snatched from their homes or separated from their loved ones – and we are doing everything we can to provide immigrant families with the information and support they need.”
Notice Mayor Garcetti did not make a distinction between legal and illegal immigrants.
Houston’s Mayor Sylvester Turner says his city won’t try to impede ICE – but, like Garcetti, went on to say it doesn’t matter if you are documented or undocumented, if you live in Houston he’s your mayor.
Shouldn’t there be a way to remove mayors and other elected officials from office when they openly defy federal law?
The lack of distinction between legal immigrants and illegal aliens is, of course, one of the big issues with today’s immigration debate. The left wants to say that the right hates immigrants, when nothing could be further from the truth. I think pretty much everyone recognizes the contributions immigrants have made to this country, and supports those who want to come here to better their opportunities and contribute to this great nation – as long as they come legally.
This isn’t about race or religion or skin color, no matter how much the left wants to paint it as such. This is about safety, security, and the rule of law. In the past few weeks alone, we’ve had thousands of people from over 50 countries illegally cross our southern border. We don’t know who they are, or what diseases and drugs they might be bringing. I don’t think that’s something most Americans actually support in their cities.
