So Daisy and I, along with the Chicklets, are in New York City right now. We are supposed to appear on Fox and Friends tomorrow morning and Monday morning, which is super exciting, particularly for the Chicklets, who just flew in from CPAC and are FIRED UP, and this will be their first national TV appearance. Obviously, we’re all dorks and we’re low on the priority pole when it comes to news, so it’s entirely possible we’ll get bumped for more important news/people, but if you’re so inclined, turn on your TV Sunday at around 8.15am ET and we might be there waving at y’all.
Anyway, it’s absolutely hilarious how different the reactions to this city are between the four of us. Daisy and I are not what you would call “fans” of NYC. We were here to promote our book a few years back, and we were here on another occasion, and yeah – not fans. The bed bugs Daisy dealt with on one of our trips didn’t help. But beyond that, we’re just not fans of crowds, or grime, or traffic, or mean people – all of which are plentiful here. Hannah has never been here until today, and is soaking it all in, and Kimber is LOSING HER MIND with excitement because she absolutely adores it here and she has a million plans for all the things she wants to do while we’re here.
But what we’re all in agreement about is that we love each other to pieces, and it’s SO MUCH FUN when the four of us are together. Tonight, we went out to eat, and had a lovely waiter, Rodney, who was just DARLING to us throughout the whole meal – absolutely darling.
Until the end of it.
He’d been overhearing us, apparently, talking about CPAC and other stuff, and decided to ask us what we were doing in NYC. So we said, “We’re here to be on a show tomorrow.” And he said, “Oh! What show?” And we said, “We’re going to be on Fox.” His face fell, and I said, “Yikes – are you mad at that?” And he said “Well, that depends. Are you friends with them?” And we said that we didn’t know them well enough to be friends with them, and he became kinda agitated and said he just was upset because teachers shouldn’t have guns (?), and that our country is heading in the wrong direction.
It was really odd. And because I’m me, I was immediately in “let’s smooth this over” mode, and tried to convince him that we just shouldn’t talk politics, but you guys, he was adamant. He wanted to argue about politics, and that was that. So he said, “I’m not on the right because I believe in common sense” and we told him that common sense is WHY we’re on the right, and he said, “But economically, being on the right makes no sense.” And I was all, “Are you SEEING our economy right now? It’s basically amazing.” And then he was like, “But it only became amazing because of what Obama did” and then we knew we were gonna get nowhere so we just started joking about how glad we were that we’d already eaten everything and there was nothing left for him to poison, and you guys it was SO UNCOMFORTABLE because his demeanor completely changed. He was no longer darling – he was angry. He became formal and stiff, and went off to fetch our bill.
And what I noticed most of all is that we weren’t. It was completely fine with us that he disagreed with us politically. We still wanted him to be our darling waiter and laugh with him and joke with him, but there were veins popping out of his throat and he was visibly angry.
When he brought our bill, he seemed to have softened a little, but again wanted to engage us politically, which we didn’t really want to do. He wanted to talk about how “assault weapons” need to be banned completely, and how he’d served in the military and when he used weapons on the job he didn’t take them home at night – he turned them in. And I was all, “That’s because they belonged to your employer. That’s like me not taking my laptop I use at work home with me.” And then we could tell that the veins were gonna pop again, and as he took our payment he said, “Let’s see how you guys feel about the economy in a couple years,” and walked away, and I called after him, “We’ll be enjoying our tax refunds.”
It was such a telling experience for all of us. We discovered Rodney was a liberal, and our feelings about him DID NOT CHANGE. He discovered we were conservatives, and became almost immediately hostile.
We’ve only been here a few hours, and we’ve already had a political altercation, and we WEREN’T EVEN TRYING, you guys.
It’s gonna be an interesting couple of days.
Stay tuned!
