Organization? Turns out liking that makes you a hateful, racist, sexist, classist bigot…
Add it to the list.
From Fox News:
The recent TikTok trend of showing off perfectly organized and styled home pantries is rooted in a history of classist, racist and sexist social structures, according to one Chicago professor.
Through her research at Loyola University, Associate Professor of Marketing Jenna Drenten noticed a recent uptick in what she calls “pantry porn,” a plethora of social media videos where women show off their fully stocked kitchen and methodically organized home supplies.
While minimalist designs used to represent an anti-consumption mindset of using less and buying less, the “new minimalism,” according to Drenten, means “more is more,” so long as it is not dirty or cluttered.
Historically, Drenten says that tidiness is intertwined with status and a person’s messiness often breeds assumptions about a person’s capacity to be responsible and respectable.
“Cleanliness has historically been used as a cultural gatekeeping mechanism to reinforce status distinctions based on a vague understanding of ‘niceness’: nice people, with nice yards, in nice houses, make for nice neighborhoods,” Drenten writes. “What lies beneath the surface of this anti-messiness, pro-niceness stance is a history of classist, racist and sexist social structures.”
Drenten, citing her research, claims these viral videos of uniformly labeled and symmetrically placed supply bins, ingredient containers and shelves are created by predominantly White women and act as a “new status symbol” for what it looks like to maintain a “nice” well-kept home.
“Perhaps it’s not surprising that pantry porn found its foothold during the COVID-19 pandemic, when shortages in the supply chain surged,” she adds. “Keeping stuff on hand became a symbol of resilience for those with the money and space to do so.”
What a privileged society we live in. I love that we have people who concern themselves with complaining about bullsh*t that no one actually cares about. It seems like a great way to spend time. Poverty? Homelessness? Education? Crime?
No, no, no… organized pantries. This is where Armageddon begins, you fools!
Is my disdain for these morons coming through clearly? Good.
Don’t get me wrong… I appreciate the fact that I live in a country that has the time to concern itself with “issues” like this. But that’s the problem, isn’t it? These people are clueless to the fact that they’re among a very small percentage of people who have the time and resources to find fault here.
They’re not worrying about where their next meal is coming from… they’re finding fault with how you organize your ingredients.
This study was a waste of time and resources, you say?

I would think a well-organized pantry would more tend to a diagnosis of a person with too much time on their hands, hyperactivity, OCD, not living near a beach – where normal people spend their time, and if you are of the male persuasion, it shows you are likely married and probably retired or unemployed.
All kidding aside, is it racist to think minorities are inherently not as well organized and neat in their personal lives as the majority? A lot of my neighbors are a lot neater than I am. The only difference I can see is I don’t keep my stuff uncluttered or in order because of some compulsion, but because I have this close personal friend who reminds me 24-7 that my hoarding and being a natural slob is supposedly not normal.
For example, we have always had at least a two-car garage. Currently out garage could fit 4-5 cars. My wife has suggested that I clean it our so she could park her care in it. I promised her right after we got married 31 years ago that I would get it cleaned out the first chance I get. Like I promised, last fall I finally got around to it. I got home and the first time in several years the garage door was open, and my driveway was littered with some of my stuff that I had neatly stacked about six foot high with a small path through, from the garage. My impatient wife it seemed had decided to clean it. Anyway, after two weeks of almost full-time work, four loads on our car hauler trailer to our barn, three loads to the dump and a come and take what you want for free yard sale, my wife is now able to put one car into the garage. (She even took pictures of the garage cleaning from start to finish and sent it to all the kids and my other relatives like it was some sort of miracle that she now has a semi clean garage.) I am quite proud of myself because of a promise made 31 years ago, a promise kept type thing. I go in the garage now a few times a week as that is where my smith type weight machine is at, but it just does not seem normal anymore. (The weight bench is a good place to hide and take a nap and hide, etc.)
