WATCH: This Calvin Klein ad raises some eyebrows
This is definitely one of the weirdest controversies I’ve seen in a while.
Basically, the LGBT community is outraged over a new Calvin Klein ad, which features Bella Hadid making out with a female robot.
I have no idea what that ad is supposed to convey.
You sell underwear, dude.
I would’ve loved to be in that meeting. “Hey– yeah. I GOT IT. Let’s have a model make out with a same-sex robot. EDGY RIGHT?!”
Their whole concept backfired, because people were outraged by the fact that the “real” model wasn’t played by a real-life lesbian, or something.
Hence, Calvin Klein’s big ol’ apology.
“The concept for our latest #MYCALVINS campaign is to promote freedom of expression for a wide range of identities, including a spectrum of gender and sexual identities,” Calvin Klein said in a statement.
“This specific campaign was created to challenge conventional norms and stereotypes in advertising. In this particular video, we explored the blurred lines between reality and imagination,” it continued.
“We understand and acknowledge how featuring someone who identifies as heterosexual in a same-sex kiss could be perceived as queer-baiting,” the statement added. “As a company with a longstanding tradition of advocating for LGTBQ+ rights, it was certainly not our intention to misrepresent the LGTBQ+ community. We sincerely regret any offense we caused.”
Here at CALVIN KLEIN, we welcome all types of constructive feedback from our community. We see your comments and we appreciate them. We'd like to offer our thoughts in response to comments on our campaign video featuring Bella Hadid and Lil Miquela. pic.twitter.com/OIcIekyR9K

“Queer-baiting.” There’s another really weird term you can go ahead and add to your vocabulary.
This world, man. I’m tellin’ ya…
