I just read this, and apparently I have lost all ability to be sympathetic to people who cry “racism” because you guys, I don’t get what the fuss is about here.
According to the sourcelink, some chick named Amber Nasim and her husband Wajahat went to a Dominos Pizza in Baycliff, Texas last Friday night and Amber ordered three pizzas to go. And, because her husband is Muslim and isn’t allowed to come into contact with any pork, she asked Domino’s to ensure a “clean cut” on two of her three pizzas, so that her porky halves wouldn’t come into contact with his non-porky halves. Apparently, from what I can gather from this story, she explained to Domino’s that this was due to her husband’s religious restrictions.
And then this happened:
See how they described her? They said she was a “lady with Muslim husband.”
Amber told a news station more:
“When they handed me the pizza, they turned it around backwards to hide what they had done,” said Nasim. “I saw them trying to hide it.”
“I’m not going to lie, I flipped out,” said Nasim. “I started cussing and yelling and flicking them off.”
Because we live in a world where everyone is offended by everything and therefore everyone has to apologize for offending everyone every second of every day, Dominos is apologizing. Here’s their statement:
She did not receive the service or respect she should expect from our brand. As a walk-in customer, we should have asked for her name and number to identify her order, which did not happen on this particular busy night. A special request she made on behalf of her husband for a clean cut on the pizza, due to religious considerations – which is something we accommodate regularly without issue – should not have been used to identify her or her order.
The team member involved has been reprimanded and feels badly about this incident.
We welcome the opportunity to speak to her and offer her our heartfelt apology and make amends.
Amber is apparently willing to forgive Domino’s for this, but she won’t be ordering pizza from them in the future.
So that’s the story.
Now, here’s my question.
How was that racist?
It was literally a factual description of the people who ordered some pizzas. Is that racist now? Is it racist to call a lady with a Muslim husband a lady with a Muslim husband? Isn’t that, in fact, precisely what she is? I fail to see the racism.
Now, if they’d written an Actual Slur about Muslims, then yes. You’ve got yourself some racism. But simply referring to a lady with a Muslim husband as a lady with a Muslim husband is now racist and HATEFUL? SERIOUSLY? WHY?
I hear what Dominos is saying about asking for a name and number, but honestly, if this WAS a busy night, and it was important to be really careful on this order for religious reasons, and that’s a super helpful identifier to avoid screwing up the order, then WHY IS IT RACIST to simply describe the people accurately? Why is it HATEFUL?
This reminds me of how people sometimes get squirrely about referring to black people as black people when offering physical descriptions of them. WHY IS THIS A THING.
I don’t know. I kinda think Amber is looking for reasons to find racism where it doesn’t exist.
Discuss.
