Fergie sang the national anthem at the NBA All-Star Game Sunday night, and it was absolutely horrific. She tried to pull off some sort of weird burlesque version of the “Star Spangled Banner,” which is something America NEVER asked for.
Kimber and I didn’t know what to make of this. After the performance, we texted each other. The conversation went something like this:
Kimber: Who told her that was a good idea? What just happened?
Me: She’s on something. She had to at least be drunk. There’s no way you’d think that’s a good idea sober.
Kimber: But the back track makes me think it was done that way on purpose. Like the instrumentals were jazzy too. So someone signed off on this.
Me: Right- like the entire arrangement was predone sooooooooooo… I don’t know.
Kimber: Horrific. I don’t even know if I think it was disrespectful because it was just so freaking bad.
Me: I know. It really had like burlesque strip tease vibes. I don’t even know.
Kimber: It did. But in a terrible way.
The entire internet agreed with us.

What #fergie just did to our national anthem is way worse than any protest that could possibly happen.

#Fergie just did a Star Spangled Banner so bad, I want to take a knee to protest it. #NBAAllStar

There’s more where that came from. Everyone roasted her.
Who saw Fergie's national anthem performance at the NBA All Star Game? I think mine was better lowkey

YIKES.
Well, Fergie broke her silence.
“I’ve always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA. I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone,” she said. “I love this country and honestly tried my best.”
So she agrees. It was a hot mess.
Or does she really agree? Is she just saying that because all of America is skewering her? I’m only asking because a “source” told US Weekly that Fergie didn’t initially think anything was wrong with her rendition.
“Neither Fergie nor her team thought anything was wrong with her national anthem rendition,” a source tells Us Weekly exclusively. “That’s the way she sings a lot of her songs. She loves adding a little sexiness and being different with her riffs. It was meant to be jazz-inspired. She wanted to stand out.”
And stand out she did.
It was bad. Just admit it Fergie. No more sexy national anthems, please.
