Reports are coming in that President Trump may end the controversial DACA program very soon:
President Donald Trump is likely to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program sometime next week, according to media reports on Friday.
The act is an Obama-era policy that protects nearly 600,000 immigrants who were brought into the country illegally by their parents and are known as ‘Dreamers’.
Trump’s decision on whether to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, policy could be announced as early as next week, reported ABC News, citing multiple sources.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions discussed the program with senior White House officials on Thursday, and the Department of Homeland Security sent the White House a recommendation on what to do earlier this week, according to NBC.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters on Friday that the program continues to be under review.
I stand firmly in opposition to illegal immigration. I’ve written about it multiple times, however I do have a hard time with this.
While I know illegal immigration is illegal no matter what, I have a soft spot for these kids. In fact, I’ve met many of them. A large number of them don’t recall living anywhere but the USA. Many have not been to Mexico or Latin America since before they could walk and talk. Many cannot speak Spanish, and the vast majority cannot write in it. Many of them have never been documented in Mexico… so they are entirely nationless.
I personally knew of a girl who got good grades, worked a part-time job for her family’s business, and had attended an Indiana school since Kindergarten. Her parents were illegal, and she knew that, but she had always told her she was born in Indiana. She fully believed she was an American citizen, and was proud to be one.
It wasn’t until she started preparing to apply for college that her parents revealed she had been born in Mexico… and brought over illegally. They had decided to keep it from her to keep her from “Stressing out about it.” When I met her, she was a DACA recipient, and was attending college…. I don’t know what the future has in store for her. She knows no other home but Indiana.
I think it’s incredibly sad that they will fall victims of their parents’ actions. Will I pretend to know the solution? No, I will not. I just think it’s important to remember that these issues are not always as black and white as they seem.
We must stop illegal immigration into this country, that is imperative, but we should not blind ourselves to the reality of this situation. Teens and young adults who live illegally in this country through no fault of their own will be negatively affected . That’s just a fact.
Personally, I’d like to see every illegal gang member, violent criminal, and drug smuggler thrown out of this country first. I think they should be our absolute priority. But again, I cannot pretend that I know how to solve these very difficult issues.
What I do know, is that I can never take for granted the PRIVILEGE I feel at being an American. I am a citizen of the best country on Earth, and I thank God for that gift every day.
