According to this, a Turkish mayor went after Marie Harf on Twitter, calling her a "stupid blonde."
Mayor Melih Gokcek, who apparently is tight with the Turkish president, was angry that the State Department had criticized Turkey for the way it had handled anti-government protesters, but had said nothing about the whole Baltimore situation. So he tweeted, "Where are you, stupid blonde, who accused Turkish police of using disproportionate force?"
He went further, tweeting, "According to the blonde girl, the government’s reaction during the Gezi Park protests were worrisome, but when it comes to your country, it is normal to declare a curfew."
And then a bunch of his followers started taunting her too – with tweets saying, "Come on, blonde, answer now!"
Apparently, Turkish people are really into Marie Harf's hair color.
Marie Harf responded to questions about the tweets in a press briefing this past week, saying simply, "I really don’t think I’m going to dignify them with a response." and said that Obama HAD addressed the Baltimore riots.
I think that was appropriate, and that the Turkish mayor acted like a complete a$$clown.
But I also think that the State Department has invited criticism because their spokespeople are HORRIBLE. Marie Harf and Jen Psaki are terrible representatives of the United States, and they are worthy of every bit as much mockery as any other press secretary might get for sucking at their jobs (and yes, Bobby Gibbs and Jay Carney and Josh Earnest – I'm talking to you.) When Marie says the reason for ISIS being a problem is because they don't have JOBS, that's idiotic, and she deserves to be called out for looking like a total moron. Especially when she's smug and obnoxious about it.
Did Marie deserve the blonde dig? No, she didn't – and particularly not from a foreign mayor. Her blondeness isn't what makes her stupid, and calling attention to her hair color with a lame blonde joke is unbecoming of a foreign politician.
They should leave the snark to people like us, and not go personal on a public scale. Because it's one thing for us to poke fun at their ridiculously large necklaces and whatnot, but it's entirely another for foreign leaders to get into the fray.
Discuss.
