Yiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiikes.
According to that sourcelink, there are “multiple sources” saying that Megyn Kelly isn’t ONLY trying to exit NBC with her $69 million payout intact, but she’s also demanding an additional $10 million or else she’s not signing an NDA, and she’s threatening to “expose executives and on-air talent.”
I don’t know what any of that means, and I’m not sure I believe it, but this is what’s being reported.
One source apparently said, “It’s all out war in negotiations between Megyn and NBC. She doesn’t just want the remainder of her $69 million contract, she wants more money on top as compensation for what she believes is NBC’s attempt to not just have her off the air but to end her career.”
Listen – I don’t argue that description of what’s happened to her. Megyn should never have lost her job over her attempt to HAVE A FREAKING DISCUSSION. I maintain that she simply used the word “blackface” incorrectly. When she was trying to make a point about someone dressing up as Diana Ross for Halloween, she wasn’t actually talking about traditional “blackface” – which most reasonable people agree is offensive and inappropriate. But using darker make-up to more closely resemble a star that you admire? THAT is what Megyn was trying to talk about. Was her approach inartful? Totally. But it was a topic worthy of debate and discussion. And regardless, having a discussion where ideas and questions are talked through shouldn’t cause someone to lose their freaking job.
I hated that she apologized the way she did. It was grovel-y, weak, and pathetic. She could have just as easily said, “You know what? OF COURSE blackface is wrong. But PC culture is out of control, and there is nothing wrong with trying to dress up as someone you idolize on freaking Halloween. That’s not blackface. That’s a COSTUME that isn’t about exaggerating features or stereotyping.”
And then she should have told everyone to f*ck off, so that they’d have an ACTUAL reason to fire her, instead of this lameass reason.
Anyway, Megyn’s lawyer says all of this stuff about Megyn demanding more money is BS. He said, “Out of respect for the discussions, I am not going to share more details but any suggestion that Megyn is looking or asking for more than her contract is untrue. This is clearly planted by NBC News to continue its mission to harm Megyn and gain some sort of leverage. It won’t work. Andy Lack needs to stop.”
Like I said, it’s getting ugly.
An NBC exec allegedly said, “She needs to accept that she is done at NBC and leave. We’ve already paid her the equivalent of a Powerball win so it’s not like she struggling to pay the bills. Have some dignity Megyn and move on.”
Yikes.
Another source claims, “She wants to tear the place down now that she’s out and her team is telling everyone that she won’t be happy unless others are out with her. She believes that she has information that could do serious damage to NBC News and with her track record of delivering the death blow to Roger Ailes’ career she’s not afraid to use the information to her advantage.”
I don’t know about y’all, but that sounds legit made up. But that’s what the source is reporting, so that’s why I’m telling you.
The National Association of Black Journalists (which is an Actual Thing) released a statement about the whole Megyn Kelly debacle, saying, “Megyn Kelly’s flip comments on blackface were inexcusable. It is imperative that media organizations work to maintain the trust of audiences. The media industry has the power to inform, and an awesome responsibility to dispel ignorance and not encourage it.”
In other words, don’t engage in discussion. Ever.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar also had stuff to say, because…I don’t know. He wrote, “She’s an educated person with a news background, so there’s no way she is not informed on the issue. Which means she deliberately, without regard to the harm she would inflict on people of color, chose to pull out this old controversy. Not quite a hate crime, but hate crime-adjacent. Should she be fired? In the best of all possible worlds, yes. Either she deliberately was racist in order to juice her flagging ratings, or she was too dumb to know it was racist, which is inexcusable for a newsperson.”
Did you catch that? Now you can get into trouble for “hate-crime ADJACENT” stuff. Don’t even get me started on how stupid the whole idea of “hate crimes” is. But then to say that there are now actions that are considered “hate-crime adjacent?” OMG. We’ve gone full batsh*t.
Anyway, this spectacle isn’t over, y’all. Stay tuned.
