This is so inappropriate and wack beyond belief.
Seventh grade students attending Roberts Middle School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, were given an assignment which involved picking eight people to “save” from a hypothetical destruction of the planet. They were given 12 people to chose from total (so they HAD to leave 4 behind), but the choices had very specific characteristics.
There was an accountant with a substance abuse problem, a militant African-American medical student, a 33-year-old Native American manager who does not speak English, the accountant’s pregnant wife, a famous novelist with a physical disability, a 21-year-old female Muslim international student, a female movie star who was recently the victim of a sexual assault, a homosexual male professional athlete, an Asian orphaned 12-year-old boy, a 60-year-old Jewish university administrator, and a Hispanic clergyman who is against homosexuality.
WTH? A “Hispanic clergyman who is against homosexuality”? What kind of stupid assignment is this? A REALLY stupid one, because another choice included a “racist, armed police officer who has been accused of using excessive force.”
YES REALLY.
“Some of the language that was used within the assignment I felt that some of the kids might not even understand what it even means,” City Councilman Adam Miller told Fox 8 News.
Mr. Miller said parents should have been consulted before such a lesson was presented to students.
He said some of the language used “could lend to a lot of confusion and in my opinion just kind of implant certain stereotypes and judgments within these young kids’ minds that they shouldn’t be having at this young age,” the city councilman said.
I think it’s outrageous that 1.) The teacher thought this was a good and idea and 2.) Parents weren’t alerted. It’s inappropriate garbage.
The school district tells local reporters they are investigating the incident and the teacher is reportedly remorseful.
The teacher SHOULD be. What does this teach kids, other than acting on complete prejudice?
The school district apologized, but it’s lame.
“The intent of this lesson was to engage in an activity in diversity designed to promote tolerance and break down stereotypes,” the letter said. “The activity, which was drawn from the University of Houston’s Diversity Activities Resource Guide, was used as an ice-breaker during the first full week of school such that students can better understand each other and participate in group activities more successfully.”
I don’t see how this passed as a good “ice-breaker. No.
So. Freaking. RIDIC.
