I haven’t been writing about Lena Dunham much lately. I don’t know if it’s because I’m just sick of her and her ridiculous feminist antics, or if it’s because she’s actually made a conscious effort to stay out of headlines.
Either way, I’m cool with it. I think it’s just a momentary lapse though. She’ll be back to #resist Trump ahead of 2020. Just wait. She has influence, and she’ll try to use it.
Speaking of having influence and using it, Lena decided to share a bunch of basically naked photos of herself on Instagram to mark the 9 month anniversary of her hysterectomy. We covered it when she made the announcement. She had to get one due to her ongoing battle with endometriosis. As a fellow woman, I felt for her. I can’t imagine having the chance of birthing my own kids stripped away from me. That’s tough.
However, I have absolutely no idea why you would commemorate that entire process by posting unflattering pictures of your naked body on Instagram. Yet, that’s exactly what she did.

Today is National Leathercraft Day, National Relaxation Day and National Lemon Merengue Pie Day. It’s also the 9 month anniversary of my hysterectomy. I’ve never celebrated the 9 month anniversary of anything and I realized last night why that number feels so funny- I won’t ever do it the way I planned to. My body is mostly healed and every day I find a new bruise on my heart, but today I offer myself gratitude: from the most pained place, I somehow knew to choose myself. The purest glint of who we are and know we can be is always available to us, calm and true at our center. My friend Paul named my uterus Judy, and when she was being uppity we called her out, hence the tattoo on my ribs, which hurt like fuck even through the pain meds: #RIPJudy. Today I give thanks for Judy, for her graceful exit and for this body, which is stronger than I’ve ever given it credit for. Happy Giving Birth To Myself Day.
Again, I’m sorry that happened to her, but I’m not sorry for questioning the point in posting photos of your naked body at different angles for all of Instagram to see. You can love your body and be appreciative of it without flashing belly rolls and side boob.
I just don’t get it. I don’t get feminism. Yeah, our bodies do amazing things, but literally half the population has the same situation going on so…
