Memorial Day, seemingly unbeknownst to many, isn’t just the official day pools open. It is a day in which we honor those who have DIED defending our freedoms.
It’s also, for some reason, the day everything goes on sale.
The people over at Real Simple decided to plug some sandals:
Possibly the most tone deaf Memorial Day post I’ve seen. This is why the ridiculously low number of veterans or military family in the PR and Marketing fields is so painfully obvious. This is why you need someone like @ScoutComms on your agency team. Our clients don’t do this. pic.twitter.com/bDtRooAIEX

Oh, no.
Maybe we should be peddling “To Die For” sandals on a day meant to memorialize those who LITERALLY “Died for” our country, you know?
It feels a weeee-bit tone-deaf. Am I all worked up about it? Nah. I just think it’s stupid marketing.
Apparently, they realized it was, too:
Looks like somebody checked their mentions finally. Have a good Memorial Day. It’s okay to enjoy it and have a blast. That’s how I want to be remembered but recognize what it’s about too. pic.twitter.com/UthVDCdUgp

There ya go!
And it’s not that I think we should GRIEVE this Memorial Day. I don’t expect anyone to dress in black and mourn. Not at all! Memorial Day is all about spending time with friends and family, relishing in the FREEDOMS so many brave men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice for… and being grateful to those who have done so.
It’s just a shame that so many have forgotten that.
It’s safe to say Real Simple has:

That’s great and all. But um… are you going to mention those we are “memorializing” at all?
NAH.
So this Memorial Day, have a wonderful time with friends and family. Shop a few sales, if you’re up to it…
But don’t forget who and what it’s all about.
