He released the following statement:
“It has been the honor and privilege of a lifetime to serve my community as a Member of Congress and I am grateful for the encouragement and input of family, friends, and neighbors over the years. After thoughtful prayer and consideration, my wife Cindy and I decided that I will not seek re-election for a fifth-term in office. I am grateful for this incredible opportunity to serve and I look forward to the next chapter of my life which will include, in some way, continued public service.”
“I never viewed this amazing opportunity as a job or a career. My home has been and will continue to be in Lakeland, Florida. I look forward to returning to the practice of law and to pursuing opportunities to increase civic education for our youth, and young adults, and with that encourage more engagement and participation of future generations in government.”
“Eight years takes its toll on you. When you feel like a stranger in your hometown, it’s time to say, ‘There’s got to be an exit strategy at some point,” he added in an interview.
I guess it’s odd that all of these Republicans are heading out of town at the same exact time, but I’m really not upset by it. I WANT turnover in Congress. Don’t completely freak out. This isn’t the end of the world.
“My wife and I decided this is a good time. I never wanted to do it for a career. I’m looking forward to getting back to practicing law,” he continued. “I really want to work in a university environment as well.”
A former state House member, Ross he was telling staff about his decision and looked up at Fox News to see Speaker Paul Ryan had decided to step down.
“I thought today was going to be a slow news day!”
Ross joins more than 40 Republicans who have announced they will resign or are leaving for other reasons.
He went on to say that his decision had nothing to do with the “blue wave.”
“When I first ran, I was elected in a three-way race and won against the highest ranking Democrat, Lori Edwards, who was being supported by the DCCC and a tea party candidate that took away from my base. And then there was me that didn’t get much help at all from the NRCC, plus I had a primary. That was a tough race.
“We have been successful doing strong constituent outreach, doing town halls. The demographics are good in this district. I’m going to focus on having a conservative, pro-business candidate to succeed me and I will work for that person. I believe we’ll keep the district strongly Republican.”
It’s another race to watch. That’s for sure.
