Ed Sheeran Accused Of Plagiarism. Plus, Tons Of Stuff You Probably Didn’t Know About Ed Sheeran.

I saw this last night on Facebook, and I have to say, I didn’t know ANY of this stuff about Ed Sheeran. Not one single thing. And it’s all kinda fascinating.

So now that you have Ed Sheeran’s backstory, you should also know that he’s being accused of plagiarism.

You may recall that I talked about the unbelievable similarities between his song “Thinking Out Loud” and the song my husband and I danced to at our wedding, Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” (we’re all kinds of appropriate like that.)  If you missed that discussion, click right here. 

When I originally wrote that post in in April of 2015, apparently no lawsuit had yet been filed by Marvin Gaye’s family over Sheeran’s song.  And according to the latest news, that has now changed.  A suit has been filed.  And it’s not the only one.

Ed Sheeran also has a song called “The Rest of Our Life” which he gave to Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.  The problem is it apparently sounds an awful lot like a 2014 song sung by Jasmine Rae called “When I Found You,” so the writers of that song have also filed suit against Sheeran. And you guys, they have themselves a pretty good case.

And it doesn’t end there. Earlier this year, according to the original sourcelink, Sheeran had to add the writers of TLC’s old song “No Scrubs” to the credits of his song “Shape of You.”

At this point, given how many artists are sued for stealing from other artists, someone probably needs to create an app that just detects musical duplication before any other song writers release songs, so they can check it against previous works and know that it’s really their own, or that it’s been at the very least inspired by something already in existence.
