Yeah, so a 44-year-old Florida resident, named Reza Baluchi, thought he could just run on water using his human-sized hamster wheel, and eventually end up in England.
The Coast Guard obviously (and quite easily, I can imagine) caught up to him and arrested him. Baluchi is facing criminal charges for his attempted voyage.
According to Fox News:
He was rescued 70 miles off Tybee Island, Georgia by coast guard officials. The marathoner was found on August 26 in his bizarre hamster wheel contraption and asked “standard questions.”
“Based on the condition of the vessel – which was afloat as a result of wiring and buoys – USCG officers determined Baluchi was conducting a manifestly unsafe voyage,” the criminal complaint says.
The “manifesting unsafe” vessel is a giant metal drum, with inflatable buoys on each side and paddles that are powered by a runner inside.
70 freaking miles, you guys. I don’t even like the deep end of a swimming pool.

Despite this behavior being a bit mental, I’m actually kind of impressed.

But wait, Baluchi went full mental when officials told him they were halting his travel plans, to which Baluchi threatened to take his own life with a 12-inch knife he was wielding. Baluchi even threatened that he had a bomb aboard his hamster ship.
Fox News reported:
After days of trying to get Baluchi to board Coast Guard vessels, he admitted that he did not have a real bomb and on September 1 officers were able to get him to disembark at the USCG Base in Miami Beach, Florida.
Court documents said that this was not his first attempt to run on water in his hamster wheel. Officials said he attempted similar voyages in 2014, 2016 and 2021, all of which have ended with Coast Guard intervention.
He faces federal charges of obstruction of a boarding, and violation of a Captain of the Port order.
Okay, okay, I retract my earlier statement when I assumed this was an “easy” endeavor for the Coast Guard to apprehend Baluchi.
Can you imagine this issue resurfacing every few years?
Baluchi then informed FOX 35 that he was intending to raise funds for the homeless community, which seems a little suspect after having JUST threatening to kill himself if he couldn’t roll his way to England.

I think the bomb threat and saying he would kill himself might be the reason the Coast Guard arrested him. If he had not made threats, and he was not a hazard to navigation, they should have ignored him but made his location and such known to other mariners.
Why the Hell was he arrested? If someone wants to run to England in a giant floating hamster wheel that should be his right as an American.
I mean, if you want to get legal about it, his rights end 12 nautical miles from the coast. That’s the (I believe) accepted delineation between territorial and international waters.
