YOU GUYS.
According to this, the University of Highlands and Islands in Scotland, which is situated in an area known for its fishing industry, has issued a trigger warning on Ernest Hemingway’s famous novel The Old Man And The Sea, because it contains, “graphic fishing scenes.”
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA LOLOLOLOLOL OMG.
So, if you’re a student of History and Literature at that university, and you’re thinking about reading that particular novel, BRACE YOURSELVES for the possibility of being subjected to graphic fishing, y’all. I don’t exactly know what that means, obviously, because I’m a normal human being. But regardless, beware of GRAPHIC FISHING.
A biographer of Hemingway’s, a woman by the name of Mary Dearborn said, in response to this complete madness, “This is nonsense. It blows my mind to think students might be encouraged to steer clear of the book. The world is a violent place and it is counterproductive to pretend otherwise. Much of the violence in the story is rooted in the natural world. It is the law of nature.”
Wait. So is the world now considering fishing to be violent? I mean, I get that fish die when they’re…you know…fished. But I wasn’t aware that fishing itself required a content warning. Like – who is the person who is genuinely traumatized by seeing the act of fishing?
Y’all know I love furry animals, and I’m certainly not a person who seeks out videos or images of furry animals being hunted, but if there happens to be a hunting scene in a movie or hunting is described in detail in a novel, I don’t require a warning about it because I’m not a weak, soft, leftist moron who allows myself to be upset by literally everything.
This is all even more exponentially stupid because the university issuing the trigger warning on this Hemingway book sits in the heart of a huge fishing community. It’s not like people there are UNAWARE of fishing.
If you’ve not read the book, it’s about an old fisherman (TRIGGER WARNING) who catches a giant marlin off the coast of Cuba, ends up feeling kinda sorry for it as he strings it along his line for some days, but then ends up (spoiler alert) killing it anyway and fighting off a bunch of sharks.
It’s a classic, and it’s absurd on EVERY LEVEL that any kind of trigger warning is associated with it whatsoever. But it’s to be expected of a university who also puts a content warning on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet because it contains scenes of “stabbing, poison, and suicide.”
For crying out loud. Our world is so freaking borked.
The university stands by the warning labels though, saying, “Content warnings enable students to make informed choices.” No. They teach students to be soft, pathetic, weak-minded morons.
GAWD.
