October 31, 2017You probably know Bryan Cranston from his role as Walter White in “Breaking Bad.” (SUCH a great show. I binged watched the entire series on Netflix about a year ago.)
Cranston happens to be one of the many celebrities who said they would move if Donald Trump became POTUS.
“I would definitely move [if Trump were elected]. It’s not real to me that that would happen,” he said at the time. “I hope to God it won’t.”
“It’s just astonishing to me,” Cranston told the Hollywood Reporter. “President Trump is not the person who I wanted to be in that office, and I’ve been very open about that. That being said, he is the president. If he fails, the country is in jeopardy. It would be egotistical for anyone to say, ‘I hope he fails.’ To that person I would say, f*ck you. Why would you want that? So you can be right?”
I also think there’s a difference here. If Hillary were in office right now, I’d be rooting for her socialist-leaning policies to fail. And I think it’s fine to say that.
“I don’t want him to fail. I want him to succeed. I do. I honestly do,” he added. “And if you’ve got a good idea that helps the country, oh man, I’m gonna support you. I don’t care if you’re a Republican and I’m a Democrat or whatever, I don’t care. A good idea’s a good idea. Let’s do that. We’ve got to get away from this idea that our country is political football, and someone with a different opinion is the enemy. Assume they love this country as much as you do, and there’s always room for improvement. How can we make it better?”
It’s so weird to hear something so reasonable come from a celebrity.
I suppose this shouldn’t come as too much of a shock. He’s said some reasonable things in the past.
The biggest problem I think we have is the polemic nature of politics, and in Hollywood, it’s castigating someone who doesn’t think the same as you and branding them the villain. I look at Fox News and I honestly don’t demonize them at all; I honestly believe that what they’re saying they believe in, and for that I can’t fault them. I disagree, but I hope they can say the same about me—that I’m truly fighting for what I think are in the best interests of the country—because I think they are, too. We can have discourse and we can disagree with each other, and as Trumbo says in the movie, “We both have the right to be wrong.” That’s America.
Kind of refreshing, right?
