So apparently, there’s a fat black Muslim chick who is on a mission to make us all uncomfortable. Watch her new video to see if she accomplished her goal:

Well? Are you uncomfortable?
The woman’s name is Leah Vernon, and this video is part of her “Body Project.” When describing this project to a local radio station she said, “I’m fat, I’m black, and I’m very visibly Muslim, this is going to make some people angry, and it’s going to empower some.”
I don’t get it.
The only thing that made me uncomfortable about the video was how absolutely horrific the seemingly never-ending music was in it. But she didn’t make me particularly uncomfortable. I don’t care that she’s fat or black or “visibly Muslim” and I certainly don’t understand why any of that should make me angry or how in the world anyone could see it as empowering.
But Leah insists that this video is somehow really groundbreaking. She said she wanted to “show people stuff that’s never been done before, by a person who looks like me. I’m going to be super true, super raw, super high-fashioned with it, to basically make you see it.”
See WHAT, exactly? I still don’t get it.
What drove her to make the video was apparently a realization that she had. She said, “Yeah you’re fat, yeah you’re black, and yeah you’re Muslim, but that shouldn’t stop you from trying to live your life. I think that’s what body positivity is about, about living your best life, in your body that you have NOW.”
She wants this video to send the message that everyone needs to be unapologetically themselves, and not be afraid of how others view them. So that’s nice, I suppose, but I fail to see why I’m supposed to be uncomfortable.
Help?
