Black Man Shot By Wisconsin Police, Incident Partially Caught On Video And Immediately Prompts Violent Protests

Daily Mail is reporting that a Police officer in Kenosha Wisconsin shot an unarmed black man in the back seven times in front of his children. The police were called to answer a domestic dispute call.

The man identified by the Daily Mail as, Jacob Blake, is in stable condition in the ICU.

From the Daily Mail:

“An unarmed black man was yesterday shot in the back seven times by a white police officer in front of his children after Wisconsin police were called to a domestic dispute.

Rioting and looting erupted in the wake of the shooting as the County of Kenosha declared a state of emergency, and a curfew has been put into effect by authorities until 7 am on Monday.

Jacob Blake, 29, was rushed to hospital following the shooting in Kenosha that prompted neighbors and crowds to gather and confront officers at the scene on Sunday night. Early Monday, family members posted that Blake was in a stable condition at the ICU in Froedtert Hospital, Milwaukee.”

Statement Gov. Evers:

“Tonight, Jacob Blake was shot in the back multiple times, in broad daylight, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Kathy and I join his family, friends, and neighbors in hoping earnestly that he will not succumb to his injuries. While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country.

We stand with all those who have and continue to demand justice, equity, and accountability for Black lives in our country—lives like those of George Floyd, of Breonna Taylor, Tony Robinson, Dontre Hamilton, Ernest Lacy, and Sylville Smith. And we stand against excessive use of force and immediate escalation when engaging with Black Wisconsinites.

I have said all along that although we must offer our empathy, equally important is our action. In the coming days, we will demand just that of elected officials in our state who have failed to recognize the racism in our state and our country for far too long.”

I think this goes without saying, but I’ll wait until all the facts are out before forming my opinion.

I will say this as a general rule: STOP RUNNING FROM THE POLICE.

I will say this; the optics are bad. A black man has his back toward an officer, a flight risk yes, but I didn’t see an instance where the police officer would need to use his weapon to stop the suspect. The only reason to pull the gun would be if Joseph Blake were reaching for a weapon inside his car as he was running away.

Running away from the police shouldn’t be a death sentence. I think this officer and the nation is lucky that this man is fighting so hard to keep his life right now. If he dies our country will burn.

Kenosha was on fire last night as people took to the streets to once again show their frustration with Police brutality. The problem is this frustration is being fueled by people that don’t care about fixing any of our issues. They want to take control of our country and make fundamental changes.

This is really the last thing our country needs. I pray this man makes it, for the sake of our country. I hope the Police understand that we support them and that at the end of the day, we just want everyone to go home to their families.
